Has anyone tried these for anxiety?
I sometimes get anxiety and I’m due to go on a weekend away In May and I’m worried I will get anxiety whilst I’m there (has happened before) just need something that will see me through the weekend so I can enjoy it without feeling panicked at times.

I've used them and they did help me. I don't know whether it was placebo effect or not but it doesn't really matter, I felt less anxious.

Findingthisdifficult1234 · 27/02/2020 13:38

Did they make you drowsy or anything? It’s for a hen do and I’ll be drinking etc will it still be ok to drink? Don’t want something that’s going to make me sleep for ages but equally do not want that panicked feeling around other people as i won’t know how to handle it being out of my comfort zone.

No, they didn't make me feel drowsy at all. And I'm prone to drowsiness, even the non-drowsy anti histamines make me drowsy.

I’ve used them and definitely feel less anxious. Might be placebo but really don’t care if it is. No side effects at all.

springydaff · 27/02/2020 13:45

Kalms are amazing, I highly recommend them. I know someone who taught a student who used them to come off crack!!

That said, you might have a look at getting some beta blockers (propanalol) from your GP for times like this - keep them in your bag.

I don't know how either goes with drinking though, sorry. Your GP will know though.

Also get some relaxation skills under your belt eg proper breathing/visualisation/mindfulness.

Hope you have a lovely time.

Is propranolol not something to be taken daily? Or Just when I feel panicked? I know anxiety shouldn’t happen but I worry taking long term medication as if I’m with my husband and children it rarely happens. It’s just being away from my usual routine that I get it. But I don’t want to stop going to things because of it. Never had it before I had my children.
I’ve been looking up mindfulness and I think it could help. I don’t want anyone to know on the hen do I have anxiety so I’d have to hide it which I think makes me more panicked to be honest.

Kalms are great for taking the edge off. They don't limit it entirely but tbh I think I need to go back on anti depressants to manage mine as it's spiralling again. You can drink on kalms but stay aware that alcohol can make you more anxious

Findingthisdifficult1234 · 27/02/2020 14:03

Kitk, yes the drinking definitely won’t help. But I want to drink while away. Tricky situation. I might not even get anxiety it’s just Incase I do. As it seems to come from no where then takes a while to go and the thought of having it on a plane/abroad away from home makes me scared.

Why not ask your Dr for Busperone (not sure how to spell it) it’s an as and when anti anxiety medication.

Kanga83 · 27/02/2020 14:09

Can you take kalms long term? Do they interfere with sleep i..e hearing your kids in the night? I'm struggling not to be ratty with everyone at the moment, not enough for a trip to the GP, just a lot going on and a child who doesn't sleep.

springydaff · 27/02/2020 14:29

Kalms are herbs so yes there is a limit to how long you take them.

They don't make you groggy, they just take the edge off. They're great! Another herb that is really good for anxiety is St John's Wort. It's the most prescribed anti - depressant in Germany, apparently.

Do speak to your GP op, its important you do - you can ask about propanalol eg. I have a friend who has a few valium handy (prescribed by his gp) in case of an anxiety attack. He rarely uses them but it's good to have them there.

catanplayer · 27/02/2020 14:46

Did nothing for me. I went to GP in the end and he prescribed me propranolol which has worked well.

Findingthisdifficult1234 · 27/02/2020 14:59

With Propranolol do you take that when you feel an anxiety attack coming on? Or is it something you take daily?

Findingthisdifficult1234 · 27/02/2020 15:01

Ok I’ll make a GP appointment and ask about different options. I think it’s the worry of having an anxiety attack that I will end up having one!! Seems crazy I know. As nothing to panic about really. I just feel it coming and then can’t control it

Findingthisdifficult1234 · 27/02/2020 15:03

Having something like Valium ready to take sounds a good idea as knowing I have something to stop an attack will make me feel better and more in control i think

OP posts:
springydaff · 27/02/2020 18:31

Nothing crazy about it op! It's an illness just like any other (one of the worst imo). Be kind to yourself lovely xx

Thankyou springydaff Smile

I've taken Propranolol on an as and when needed basis. It really helped me, I did have to halve the tablet sometimes as it made me nauseous but I did find it extremely helpful when I had a very bad anxiety experience and couldn't get to the Drs for a while. It really saved me and calmed me down.

chocolateisavegetable · 28/02/2020 10:03

Have you tried a weighted blanket to help with your anxiety?

Baaaahhhhh · 28/02/2020 10:13

I take Kalms for a couple of weeks before going on holiday, it always helps me. Again, no idea if Placebo or not, but if it works, it works. Also once when I forgot to take them away with me, I got some Passiflora in Switzerland, and that seemed to do the trick as well.

Personally I wouldn't take Propranolol or Valium, because I wouldn't want to rely on it. Personal experience from a DM who has taken these her entire life, and is addicted. However, this is only my very personal experience, so this has coloured my view of those types of drugs.

springydaff · 28/02/2020 17:00

Valium is prescribed in very small doses these days eg 5 or 10. Medics have learnt their lesson on that one (after an entire generation of women became addicted to them 🙁).

Is propanalol addictive?

catanplayer · 28/02/2020 17:10

I take 2 propranolol a day - 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening. To start with I felt tired, but I've adjusted to it. I've been on it for 3 months and been told I can reduce it to 1 a day whenever I want. Hopefully I'll end up at the point where I take it on an as and when basis.

SallyWD · 28/02/2020 17:26

Take the maximum dose for several days and they definitely have an effect. I also carry around a bottle of water with some drops of Bach rescue remedy added. The rescue remedy combined with Kalms really help.
