He's only said ahh sounds, nothing else. Should I worry?

I didn't want to read this and run as I was in the exact same position with DS - he's now nearly 2 and a half and has a wide vocabulary and we're finally moving on to two and three word sentences.

If you're concerned I would strongly recommend visiting your GP and HV and pushing for a speech and language appt to put your mind at rest.

KindergartenKop · 26/02/2020 21:59

Don't worry until about 20 months. Then they should be putting words together by 2-2.5.

TheQueens · 26/02/2020 22:16

I think you may be worrying a bit early, my 14 month old does dada and mama and some incoherent babbling, the mama and dada have only been definitely recognisable in the past 6 weeks or so. I wouldn't panic or pressure him, he sounds like he's getting there with the noises he's making 😊

I really wouldn't be pushing for a speach and language therapist at 14 months Confused

Op it's fine. My son only really started using words at 2.

MichaelMosleyisagod · 26/02/2020 22:19

My 9 year old didn’t say anything (and I mean nothing - not even mum!) until she was 2, whereas my 12 year old could sing the whole of twinkle twinkle at 15 months. So they are all different and she quickly caught up once she started!

sniffysnifferson · 26/02/2020 22:22

My lo barely spoke more than 3 words at nearly 2, mentioned to HV at 2 year review and she wasnt overly concerned as wasn't quite 2 yet , 6 months later doesn't shut up talking from opening eyes in a morning until bedHmm

TeddyBeans · 26/02/2020 22:26

DS is nearly 2 and doesn't talk at all. Not concerned as PPs say, you'll be wishing they stop talking soon enough 😂

Nduja · 26/02/2020 22:26

It’s fine but make sure you are not using a dummy - RCSLT recommends they are binned by 12 months.

Freshnewus · 26/02/2020 22:26

My son is nearly 2. He only says uh-oh. And ammy (mummy) and diiiish (finished).

My eldest son was the same, so I'm not worried. Eldest DS is 3 and is now a chatterbox!(all of a sudden!)

SoMuchToBits · 26/02/2020 22:29

Mine didn't speak until 16 months and then only used about 3 words until he was 19 months, but then started saying a lot of words very quickly.

He's now 19 years old and has a huge vocabulary, so I wouldn't worry yet!

merryhouse · 26/02/2020 22:30

My son's first proper word ("ta" - so cute) was about 13 months.

He's now at a Top University.

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 26/02/2020 22:34

Dude chill, he's only just leant he has a mouth. Plenty of time for words yet.

Pipanchew2 · 26/02/2020 22:36

Hi OP,
13 months isn’t outside of the normal range for 1st words. If you are worried it would be good to see an SLT for a quick check and som advice on promoting language development: you may be able to access a drop in at local children centre.
I’m an SLT and always advise if you’re worried try and see a therapist if nothing else to put your mind at ease. Depending on local services you may struggle to get an SLT referral at 13months unless there are other concerns which is why I would suggest seeing if there are drop ins at children’s centres near you.

Mydogatemypurse · 26/02/2020 22:37

My second son was the same. Now he never shiuts up and is thriving in school. Mention at a baby clinic if you are worried but I think it's fairly common

sandscript · 26/02/2020 22:41

13 months?!! Chill out OP!

iwillnevereatspaghetti · 26/02/2020 22:42

Ask for a hearing check. We were dismissed like this with my dd and it turned out she had a problem
