Can I install CCTV outside my house?

Hello

I was wondering if it is legal to install CCTV outside my house? The camera would be facing my garden opposite. The camera would also pick up people driving past and walking past.

I would just like to know if anyone has any knowledge of the legalities.

Thank you.

I think it’s only legal to film your land.

Yes.
There will be lots of people that tell you no or that you must have stickers and warnings up but if it is for you to protect yourself and your property then it is fine.
However you must not provide footage to other people, i.e. transmit the data and if you access the footage online it must be a secure website.
Having just provided valuable footage to the police after a crime further down the street I am very happy we have out 4 camera system and even thinking we might get a more user friendly one and add 2 more cameras (essentially 2 cover each other so to take one out of action it will be picked up by its partner, along the 3 edges of our property)

Yes you can. I have CCTV that covers my garden, the pavement, my car and a sizeable chunk of park land opposite. This is because the town is being overrun with feral teens smashing windows, opening doors, kicking doors, smashing plant pots, ripping down hanging baskets and lately (and this is very outing to any local reading this), breaking into a grey box on the street and ripping out the wiring causing the whole town to lose its street lighting.

The police know about my CCTV and where it covers because they've been over to my house to ask for names of who I've seen getting up to the trouble. They are fine with it and know the kids stand on the park land to throw stuff at my house so I need that area covering.

The kids mums are also well aware I have the ability and the balls to post their little shits online or at a bare minimum name and shame them on the local groups, including tagging their mums.

All that shit has stopped at mine now. The parents are scared I'll do it and their kids (who these parents claim they have no knowledge/control of them doing all this) have managed to stop them coming to mine. Funny that.

The front of a house is classed a 'public' so if you see your drive, garden, footpath, road and perhaps some of the front of a house opposite that's fine.

The back of the house is classed as private so can not be recorded or in view of your camera's.

As told to me by the ex police man that fitted our camera's.

The back garden may be private but if you believe it is possible for a trespasser/thief to get in then you are justified in having CCTV to cover that area. We have wainlap fencing with one neighbour that has been pulled up during an attempted theft (the one that led us to install the CCTV) so we absolutely cover our back garden with one of the cameras.
It's all about the intention and how you use it. If I had the cameras set to look into that neighbours garden that would be improper, but I am allowed to set it so I can view the fence and see if anyone is trying to trespass into my garden.

We have ring cameras all round the house , we make sure we don't film our neighbours land . Much cheaper and frankly better than normal cctv .

Thank you all :)
