Can someone recommend me a good moisturiser??

That won’t require me to remortgage my house?

My face is so, so dry and flakey and I can’t find anything that works. Dries up as soon as I put any make up on and looks awful.

I’ve just moved to olay 7 in 1. Costs about £10 and it’s brilliant. I remember my mum raving about their stuff but always associated it with “old people” things because she was a different generation. But it’s gold!

I think personally it's not about the moisturiser and more about what you do before. The Ordinary has some excellent serums for not very much. Try hyaluronic acid and then something like Simple moisturiser. The acid helps your skin absorb moisture. They'll be best able to advise in store or you could check out their website. I use about five different serums every night, which sounds loads but it takes about five minutes tops as they sink in so quickly, and my skin has never been better.

I use Olay Total effects 7 in 1, which is a moisturiser and serum all in one. I also use rosehip oil. My skin has never felt better.

LUSH ultrabland cleanser. Game changer for me. Even in the coldest months my skin is never dry.

ImaginaryFriends · 26/02/2020 13:08

I'm a big fan of Astral really cheap and cheerful.

I also have dry skin that can get quite sore in the winter. Since I've been using Astral I haven't looked back.
Before that I would spend £££s trying different moisturisers hoping one would work.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/02/2020 13:09

CeraVe,I bang in about it all the time but it's SO good,I don't even have dry skin any more,it's transformed it!

inwood · 26/02/2020 13:11

Blue nivea once a week
Aldi Lacura day and night Q10 creams. Cheap as chips so can really slather them on.

I have been through so many expensive creams and I haven't found a better combination than this.

Jessie9323 · 26/02/2020 13:16

I use boots no7 protect and perfect, my mother uses the age one. They are usually on offer and you get a £5 off voucher when you buy most stuff in boots.

Cloudyapples · 26/02/2020 13:37

What cleanser are you using? Could it be stripping your skin too much? Also are you using a toner and/or serum? They can help hydrate your skin and make other products absorb well.

Gohackyourself · 26/02/2020 13:38

Another vote for astral!
I work outside all year round and have tried the expensive creams to the cheap but astral is brilliant! Savers do a massive tub for about £1.99 that will last you the rest of winter !

TheBlueStocking · 26/02/2020 13:40

I think Dream Cream by Lush is a great cheap moisturiser. And you can mix a bit of it with a more expensive one to make it last longer.

Also, drink lots of water! It's the best thing you can do for your skin and it's pretty much free.

Keepingthingsinteresting · 26/02/2020 13:41

I feel your pain, my skin sulks horribly in the winter. I agree with PP that it’s not just the moisturiser. Ensure you are cleansing properly, and use a toner afterwards (Simple do both) as if not clean the won’t absorb properly. I second The Ordinary hyaluronic acid (drawstring holds moisture into the skin) & then the age appropriate Olay moisturiser. In the evening don’t use the hyaluronic acid, use a serum, protect & perfect is good, or for a treat the l’occitane overnight review is magic, then try an oil (again the ordinary). Sounds weird, but really does work, then a different night moisturiser- they are heavier & sink in better. Again Olay is fine, l’occitane is lovely, or the nivea soft is also really nice.
Also, make sure you are massaging in everything well with upward & outward strokes.
If, like me it’s the wind that is a real pain in the winter big flaky patches on apples of cheeks, chin etc, then use a tiny, tiny bit of Elizabeth Arden 8 hour skim protectant- it is pricy, but last for ever and is literally magic for all sorts of things. Just a smear on top of everything else will protect you ( though doesn’t work great with makeup!).

Body shop Vitamin E. I've used it for years. My skin is really dry too

AudacityOfHope · 27/02/2020 08:27

I've been using Clarins Mango Balm Mask at night; layer it on like a mask but then just leave it on all night.

My skin is really soft! It's £25 on Amazon but it lasts soooo long. I've got eczema and really dry skin but this seems to be able to moisture it but not to the point where I go sporty (my skin is a delight Grin)

homemadecommunistrussia · 27/02/2020 08:30

Eucerin the only thing I have ever found to clear my flakey face. Not greasy and unscented and on offer at the moment.
I know lots of people are recommending stuff, but you really should try this first.Grin

Biancadelrioisback · 27/02/2020 08:32

I use the white Nivea every day. Just a small amount but my skin really soft. I usually have oily skin but this works really well.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 27/02/2020 08:34
  • get enough sleep
  • cut down alcohol
  • no smoking
  • drink enough, eat healthily
Oh and
  • basic Nivea, rich stuff at night, light stuff in the day (or use a tinted moisturiser)
ClientQueen · 27/02/2020 08:35

Superdrug pure hydrating serum with a moisturiser over the top (serum is about £4)

woodencoffeetable · 27/02/2020 08:37

yes to blue pot nivea
weleda skjn food is also good.
both as night cream, they are too greasy under make up.

2 layers of 'normal' moisturiser. put it on and let it sink in before adding the second layer.

123cupcake · 27/02/2020 08:40

Try AproDerm colloidal oat cream as a moisturiser.

TheVanguardSix · 27/02/2020 08:43

Lush Ultrabland is THE BOMB!
Followed by packing on the Cicaplast by LaRoche Posay (how can a bloody miracle be sooo cheap?).
You need nothing else if you're armed with one or both of these, OP.

ifyoulikepinacolada · 27/02/2020 09:20

Embryolisse lait creme concentre! Also make sure you’re exfoliating gently but regularly (i like chemical ones not physical)

Frazzlerock · 27/02/2020 09:22

I love Arbonne stuff (and I'm not usually one for 'pyramid schemes' but I tried it and it really suited my skin) but it is fucking £££ so I only ever use it if DP has bought me for xmas or birthday. It does last though.

I'm yet to find a cheaper alternative. I've tried The Ordinary and I broke out in spots, but I know they have many different options so maybe its trial and error.

Placemarking for ideas...

DidgeDoolittle · 27/02/2020 09:59

As a fellow dry skin sufferer, I empathise.
Make sure you clean your skin with an oil or oily balm. Body shop do a good balm.
I use either Weleda skin food or La Roche Posay Cicaplast balm as a moisturiser. Really massage them in. I use a thick layer at night and give them time to sink in.
I also use a hyaluronic acid serum underneath. Superdrug Pure is a good one.
