Wondering why employers give “False hope”.

I really don’t get why employers lie to (unsuccessful) candidates at Interviews. It has happened to me and now it’s happened to a friend. I understand that whilst it’s nice, they probably don’t have the time to email every single applicant who was interviewed, however I don’t think it’s right for them to lie. For example, “ You will definitely here by 5 o’clock on Monday and then be ghosted”

And even worse more recently. Me and my friend went for a job at an organisation, we were all told (there was 8 of us) that we had all been offered jobs. However in reality only three of us had. After I had received a start date, my friend emailed the organisation multiple times and was ghosted. On my first day, I asked when said friend was starting, in which they said “she isn’t”. I said but you offered her a job, in which they replied “Yeah, we say that to everyone, so everyone leaves feeling happy”. I then said when are you going to tell her: “ We are not, we don’t legally have to and at the end of the day We’ve got more important things to do“

I just don’t get why lie, just be honest. I’m not saying reject everyone on the spot, because I can understand why that might be a bad idea in a safeguarding way (people get violent when angry and disappointed). But why can’t they just say “ We will let you know if successful“

Any thoughts on this? Are you an employer who has done this?

Do you mean “false hope”? I’ve never heard of “force hope” before.

It's 'false hope'

But if that really happened, that's an awful thing to do.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 25/02/2020 23:32

YANBU - they shouldn't make offers they aren't prepared to honour.

And it's "false hope"

PupsAndKittens · 25/02/2020 23:32

@PurpleDaisies yes! OMG it’s been a long day “force hope” GrinGrin

It’s all skullduggery these days and it shows the companies true colours from the outset.

I went for an interview two weeks ago and never got a thanks but no thanks. Just ghosted. It’s not hard to bcc email all the unsuccessful people. Do companies really interview hundreds of people for one job? If you gone for an interview it’s just plain rude. Some people may travel miles to get there. I think what companies also fail to remember is that you may be a consumer of their services or products.

It happened to me years ago. Got a verbal offer at the end of an interview followed by an excruciating phone call where they babbled on incoherently about some woman coming back to them and taking the job instead. I assumed my hearing loss must have scared them off (it wasn't illegal then) but maybe some employers are just incompetent idiots. Grin

I wouldn't worry. Dust yourself off and keep trying.

I forgot to put this: My friend had to cancel her 21st holiday as a result, because she thought she would be starting because they said she would and now will likely have to do it for her 22nd instead Confused

Just makes me really angry

"Yeah, we say that to everyone, so everyone leaves feeling happy”

WTF?

I've never heard of an employer doing this - they actually tell people they're hiring them then ghost them?

What kind of companies are these? Is it casual work?

Sounds like they could be shooting themselves in the foot here. This sort of thing gets around, and they could find themselves not attracting the candidates they want.
