Is this plumber ripping us off?

This is for a non-emergency job. Replacing a pair of basin taps. It's not urgent as we have other bathrooms.

Guy has quoted £182+VAT to supply and fit. That seems astonishingly high to me. Probably would be reasonable as a callout charge for an emergency as I would expect to be fleeced then. Pair of new taps is c£20. I can't imagine the job would take more than an hour would it?

Or am I hopelessly naive?

This is in a non-London city.

How does that compare to prices you have paid for plumbing work?

Does sound a lot. Can you get another quote?

crazydiamond222 · 25/02/2020 12:40

Sounds expensive. Try asking for quotes on mybuilder

NewnameOldposter · 25/02/2020 12:42

It does sound a bit high.

When you do have the work done, get them to add isolation valves onto the pipes in if you don't already have them. Then you can work on them yourself in future more easily if you fancy it.

Could you buy your own taps and then get a quote just to fit them?

Comefromaway · 25/02/2020 12:48

Is the work being carried out between 8.30-4pm?

The company I work for has a minimum charge of 2 hours as it's not worth travelling else but it does seem a bit high. Depends what kind of taps they are though.

BigStripeyBastard · 25/02/2020 12:55

If they are supplying the taps, you can maybe look at them being charged at double what you could buy them for in the shop.
They probably have a flat fee for attendance, which could be anything from 50 to 100 quid
An hours labour minimum could again be anything from 40 to 80 quid, I don't know.

You could, as a PP suggests supply the taps yourself and then look into getting a handyman to fit, that would workout cheaper for you.

bravotango · 25/02/2020 13:02

Yep that's loads! Ask if you can supply the taps yourself and get a revised quote.

DIY.

It really is something you could do yourselves, it is not difficult and would take less than an hour (if you're fairly practical).

But yes that seems a lot.

Walkerbean16 · 25/02/2020 19:25

My husband would charge £60ph (shouldn't take more than an hour) + cost of taps.

Get another plumber!
