DBS Check (Scouts Association)

Can anyone answer a question for me or know how I can find out the answer (i.e a solicitor or suitable person to answer)?

Applicant has a caution from 2015 for drunk in charge of a minor (child under the age of 7).

If they go through the application for DBS check with the scout association, will they pass?

I perform CRB checks for Girlguiding.

You don't pass/fail a CRB. Your caution will show up on the CRB check but the Scout Association will then have to decide if you pose a risk, or not, based on what shows up.

Whether you disclose this caution is the first factor to face. You'll be viewed very badly if you don't disclose this to the person doing the CRB. It will show up anyway so make sure you disclose.

I'd suggest a prepared letter / statement explaining the situation. The person doing the CRB will probably refer your case to Head Office to decide, but it's not necessarily a "fail".

What's going against you is that the offence involves a child and you are wanting to volunteer with children. Also that it's fairly recently.

What have you done to ensure it never happens again? Have you given up drinking for example? We're there extenuating circumstances? Were you only slightly above the limit or very drunk?

Taken on face value, I'd probably not be inclined to accept you in Girlguiding unless you had a very comprehensive and believable justification.

(Realised I called it a CRB check above. It's called a DBS now, but same thing)

Worth knowing that you will always have to disclose this when having a DBS. It will always show up on your file. I've seen cautions from 20+ years previously show up on the checks.

Given the offence involves a child, it's going to be a challenge for you to work with children in the future. I would consider otger ways to work/volunteer.

Thank you. It's not for me but an applicant has confidentially disclosed this to me before they become a parent helper.

Really appreciate the advice you have given. It's very helpful.

How did this pan out? Did it show up on the DBS?
