Few days of freedom - what to do?

Hi,

In the school holidays in the summer DH is taking the kids to visit his family for a few days. I can't get the same time off, so I'm staying at home. They'll be gone just under a week. I'll have three completely free days during that time, and all the evenings. What shall I do with myself? It's almost like there are too many possibilities! So I'm looking for some ideas. What would you do?

We live on the outskirts of London, and I work in London some of the time, working at home sometimes, so it's easy enough to get to for a full day, or to stay in after my days in the office. I don't want to go anywhere where I'd go with the kids. I'll only have access to public transport as DH is taking the car. Don't mind travelling a reasonable distance for a full day.

Ideas I've had so far include museums and galleries (the non-child friendly ones - no dinosaurs!), the theatre, cinema, maybe a day trip to another town (but which one?), a proper good long walk somewhere. Also planning some proper relaxation at home - the food I want, the TV I want, some peace to read a book. Probably see some friends at some point. Cost not necessarily important.

Any other ideas? Good things to do in London that maybe aren't the obvious ones? Towns or cities close enough to spend a fairly full day? Ideas for your favourite relaxing things to do at home?

Much as I'll miss the little buggers, I secretly can't wait!

  1. Brunch somewhere with great food. Not sure where you live, but Grounds and Grapes in Honor Oak Park is my favourite
  1. A leisurely walk through an area you don't typically visit, maybe central London or somewhere like Hampstead Health.
  1. Drinks with friends one evening?
  1. Depending on what you like to do, maybe a day trip to Brighton, Winchester, Oxford, Bath?
  1. I like Hampton Court Palace, but that may be a bit too child-friendly?

I was thinking some nice food out somewhere. I vaguely know Honor Oak Park as friend lives near there, so maybe I could go to your suggested place with her.

I think Hampton Court is a bit too child-friendly.

Oxford might be an idea. I have family near Bath, so I'll probably avoid Bath and Bristol.
