I am so confused by these - are they actual real live animals? Are we allowed to get rid of them or do we have to have them in our house forever while they breed etc. And if I can get rid of them how do I do this without contaminating the water supply with live animals? Help... I knew I should have put my foot down when ds bought them in toy shop with his pocket money

I think they are weird tiny shrimpy things. Ours died Sad

Somanysocks · 24/02/2020 23:30

Of course they're live creatures, what else could they be?

Somanysocks · 24/02/2020 23:32

They don't tend to be very long lived though.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 24/02/2020 23:32

We were given some od thesw in a "kit" we havent done as i got confused about the water. I assume they die off when you rake the eggs out...

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 24/02/2020 23:37

They’re fascinating. If you’re lucky they will form a self-sustaining colony for ages, but not forever - eventually it’ll get out of whack and the colony will die. If you do ever need to get rid of them then take them carefully to the nearest pond in a local park or somebody else’s back garden and pour them in and don’t think too carefully about whether the pond temperature is appropriate

MashedSpud · 24/02/2020 23:42

Don’t add them to a pond. Sea monkeys are brine shrimp and they are salt water creatures. It’s also not a good idea to release things into the wild.

They don’t live for that long so I wouldn’t worry about long term care.

TheSlipperSchlepp · 25/02/2020 00:17

Yes they're tiny brine shrimp.

We had about 5 survive out of the millions of tiny ones that hatched. They lasted about 3 months.

I'm adding a picture of 2 them, it's massively magnified but shows how cute they are (very) close up!

Argh we got some of these Aqua Dragon things for Christmas and I wish I'd never 'activated them' they're breeding and going on forever. I'm tempted to accidentally knock the tank over and be done with it. What's the weird thing that happens when two of them get stuck together and then the back one dies but still clings on. It's gross.

Walkerbean16 · 25/02/2020 01:13

Oh don't Habby, my son, obsessed with animals, veggie by his choice etc knocked his over! He was distraught!

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 25/02/2020 06:53

Oh whoops, yes, it’s daphnia you can release into the wild not sea monkeys. I get them confused because we ended up breeding daphnia from our sea monkey kit.

DragonflyInn · 25/02/2020 12:02

Shit! You’ve just reminded me we haven’t fed ours for ages. Guess that could be the end of them then!

Legoless · 25/02/2020 12:28

But what to do with a tankful of dead possibly alive aqua dragons? Just pour on grass?

what a shitty lesson for kids on how to look after living creatures

whiskeylullaby2 · 25/02/2020 17:08

Ours have never lasted more than a few weeks. Much to the disappointment of my devastated children !

I wouldn't worry too much about the long term care of them, in my experience they are not the easiest things to keep alive, despite my efforts!!
