The Queen is VERY elderly. I think people almost forget this.

Yes, she is 5 years younger than her husband who is still alive.

And she is 7 years or so younger than her mother was when she died.

But she's 93, nearly 94!!

In my middle class well cared for and generally healthy extended family, the longest lived have been 93 and 95. Most elderly relatives die in their 80s (no complaints here, that's still a very fair innings).

But HRH still gets out of the house, without walking aids, and puts in a public appearance more often than not.

She's extraordinary. Does anyone else here have a 93 year old in their family who is equally sprightly?

I'd rather scrub toilets than have to entertain Trump. Just imagine instead of sitting in front of Corrie with a cuppa and some biscuits you have to get dressed up and sit and chat to him. Give me the toilet any day.

She's had to entertain far worse leaders and dictators than him

Lordfrontpaw · 25/02/2020 16:38

And she’d have to keep a close eye to make sure that no one spat in his tea (or Dr Pepper or whatever he drinks).

My kids had 3 great great aunties on their dads side. One died at 91, one recently died at 105 (was in a home the last 2 years but until then sprightly) and one who is 92 now and until about 2 years ago was down on the floor playing trains with my kids and plaiting my daughters hair!

StealthPolarBear · 25/02/2020 16:52

I like to think she did it herself.

“Phileeep - do pahs me the teapot please. One would like to relieve oneself before Donald’s visit...”

My husband's two grans died recently at 95 and 98. Both were very sprightly and mentally strong until very near their deaths. Both had falls and shortly afterwards deteriorated very rapidly. All of my grandparents died a lot younger so seems quite old to me.

StealthPolarBear · 25/02/2020 16:59

I met my great grandparents a few times. I remember them being elderly, frail. While my own remaining grandparent is elderly and frail, my children will have memories of going on holiday with him, walking round towns and going for dinner, and similar with my other grandad, who played football with them in the garden.

She's had to entertain far worse leaders and dictators than him Well I'd still rather scrub toilets, wash the dishes, cook dinner, vacuum the house and a host of other things, living in a palace wouldn't make up for spending your time entertaining Trump and worse.

My mum was born just a few days after the queen. Despite never drinking or smoking she is in poor health this last couple of years, but tbf she had a very hard life. Long live the queen I say, she really is a remarkable woman.

WeirdMoments · 25/02/2020 21:10

She doesn’t even have to entertain trump, she just wiggles her ring and her guards do it for her

Misplaced sympathy entirely

BecauseReasons · 26/02/2020 06:28

I'm sure being the queen has its difficulties. But so does being anyone else tbh. And she has rather more support to deal with those challenges than most people have.

As for her being old, the way things are going with pension ages, l'll still be teaching a class of thirty at that age! And I'm sure most pensioners would rather be doing her job than sitting slowly freezing to death in sheltered housing, trying to survive on the pittance that is their pension.

AvocadoAdvocate · 26/02/2020 06:34

FIL is 91 and still playing a full round of golf twice a week. He still does some paid work too (commercial artist). You would put him in his 70s if you had to guess his age.

WeirdMoments · 26/02/2020 13:05

And she’d have to keep a close eye to make sure that no one spat in his tea

Really not

That’s the job of the tens of guards out there.

Her job is to just be presentable and smile. Something all of us have to do outdoors anyway.

Being queen isn’t really a job, it’s privilege

Alsohuman · 26/02/2020 13:15

Women generally didn't smoke (that came later)

Not true. Just about everyone smoked during the war. My mum, who would have been 102 this year, was done for inadvertently buying black market fags in 1943!

Both my Grand lived into their 90s. Both were ok until 90 then on developed vascular dementia an the other so I grow in liver cancer but no-one know if it was age of cancer that got her in the end. My maternal grandmother lived long enough to see 2 of her great great grandchildren.
