How often do you fall asleep in front of the telly?

Life's so busy and exhausting at the moment I literally do it every night. Sometimes it's just for 10 minutes other times it can be 2 hours+. Sometimes do it with my dinner on my lap. And ONCE with a glass of wine in my hand. I've emphasize the word once because I'll never be doing that again, makes too much mess lol.

Just wondering how often do you guys do it (if at all).

It has been many years since I fell asleep in front of the TV. I think I was possibly pregnant at the time though.

Namelesswonder · 24/02/2020 20:28

Pretty often! Work fulltime, 2 DC, pretty much exhausted all the time.

Lostintransfixation · 24/02/2020 20:31

Maybe 4 times a week. I dont sit before bedtime on the other 3 days though.. Also during the day if I stop and sit I fall asleep. I've been wondering whether I have sleep apnea...

Ohffs66 · 24/02/2020 20:32

At least 2 - 3 times a week, and DH is the same.

dudsville · 24/02/2020 20:34

It sounds like you're staying awake when you need to go to sleep. I realise that's starting the obvious but address you missing the cues that tell you that you are sleepy?

IRememberSoIDo · 24/02/2020 20:34

If I lie down or put my feet up, I regularly dose off!

Miljea · 24/02/2020 20:34

I always thought it was an 'old person thing', but now I'm 57, probably 3-4 times a week; if I haven't already fallen asleep in the bath 😁

Miljea · 24/02/2020 20:35

dudsville I fall asleep in the bath at 6.30pm, and in front of the telly at 8-8.30pm!

YewandOak · 24/02/2020 20:43

Never. I need darkness and total silence to fall asleep. Oh,and pillows not cushions.

mnthrowaway202020 · 24/02/2020 20:44

I don’t watch tv conventionally - I tend to watch a film on my laptop in bed instead and I do tend to drift off partially through. But I guess I’m already laying comfortably in bed -your situation is different as you’re falling asleep with dinner on your lap or a glass in your hand whilst upright on the couch. That makes you sound extremely tired as most people would have the sagacity to put the glass down or move the food etc.

Also I think couch naps may just be part of your body’s routine now, hence why you nap on the couch virtually daily now. You additionally possibly find it comfortable or comforting to a certain degree, background noise of a film helps me drift off into a nap

WanderingTrolley1 · 24/02/2020 20:46

Most nights when I get comfy on the couch.

Sipperskipper · 24/02/2020 20:47

Rarely but I’m usually in bed by 9!

Catchuptv · 24/02/2020 20:48

I do it a lot - it's the sound of the TV it just kinda lulls me to sleep - love it.

IceColdCat · 24/02/2020 20:49

Hardly ever - but I frequently fall asleep with my kindle in my hand. I'm in bed so I think that's ok!

eurochick · 24/02/2020 20:50

Never in the living room but I got to bed early.

There is a particular programme I stick on my tablet in bed sometimes that is a sort of sleep cue. I'm usually off within two minutes of it starting.

Dogmatix34 · 24/02/2020 20:54

Never unless I’m really ill

Eatsshoootsandleaves · 24/02/2020 20:54

If I'm watching a film with OH (probably about twice a month) sitting on the sofa, I won't see the end. I can fall asleep sitting up holding a cup of tea. I'm pretty sure I'm not ill - I lead a normal life, I just zone out in those conditions. Happens in the cinema too...

BoudoirPink · 24/02/2020 21:05

I’m 47 and don’t think I’ve ever done it in my life.

However, a 52 year old friend and his wife who is my age (we all three do the same job and have young children) both do it every single night. They lie on separate sofas wrapped in rugs and doze off as soon as the children have gone to bed, until midnight, when they go up to bed. I’ve suggested to my friend that he get his iron and B12 checked, as he is quite low-energy anyway, but he thinks it’s normal.

Deathraystare · 25/02/2020 16:11

All the time ! I have a sleep disorder.
I live in a small room so often sit/lie on bed to watch tv. I often sleep through something I wanted to watch!

Amzz87 · 25/02/2020 17:31

Seems like its 50/50 then really. Some do and some dont. I guess its down to your circumstances. I forgot to mention I have a 3 year old daughter. I suppose she tires me out more than I think lol. I dont believe I have any underlying medical condition. Perhaps if this continues happening I will pop to the doctor just to be sure. Thanks for your replies though guys.

All the time. I was on half term last week, had a little nap every afternoon in front of the telly. Just had a power nap watching Tipping Point after work today. Regularly fall asleep watching whatever is in between 9pm and 10pm but I hate doing that as I wake up grumpy. Trying to stay awake but go to bed at 10pm. I've had blood tests but they showed nothing untoward but I do think I am deficient in something as I don't think it's normal at my age (38) to be having so many nanna naps.

MeanwhileAtNumber98 · 25/02/2020 17:40

Me never, unless I'm poorly.
My husband..every single night.

EssexGurl · 25/02/2020 19:24

Last night when DH had on a programme I wasn’t watching. Every week when it is Death in Paradise. Rarely if something I want to watch - unless I’ve been swimming then I’m exhausted!

Cookit · 25/02/2020 19:27

I’ve done it intentionally once or twice when I’m really tired but want to stay up eg watching something like election coverage or when DH was watching something and I got bored. Never unintentionally.

Amzz87 · 29/02/2020 17:09

Took the advice and popped to the doctors yesterday. Made the decision after I nodded off on Wednesday evening with a hot cuppa in my hand and tipped it all down my legs. No damage done just a shocking wake up. Made hubby laugh to. I've been sent for a blood test. Doctor doesn't think anythings wrong, just thinks I'm over tired. But he said it's better to be safe than sorry. Thanks for the advice guys Smile
