Spending the day in York with dh - any recommendations?

Got a child free 24 hours coming up and I'd quite like to get the train to York, spend the day there, have dinner, then get a late train home (1.5h train journey).

We've only really done York with the kids so I need some ideas which are less child centric. Also looking for great dinner recommendations.

Thanks

I don't know about dinner but I've heard Betty's tearoom are lovely

Highly recommend the rattle owl for dinner. It is just lovely.

Betty's tea rooms. Grin

Le Cochin Aveugle is an amazing restaurant that does a fantastic tasting menu. It also has a nearby wine bar- delicious!

Disfordarkchocolate · 23/02/2020 19:13

I think Betty's is mediocre. I do love a trip to the Cold War Bunker (English Heritage).

bringmelaughter · 23/02/2020 19:21

Betty’s is nice but always busy and a queue to get in.

Skosh is my absolute favourite restaurant ever. It never fails to amaze. You’ll need to book!

If the weather is nice, there's a really lovely park with some ruins in it, not far from the train station. The squirrels and birds all seemed really tame there.

I like the sound of the bunker.

Source on Castlegate. Very central and options for kids.

SentimentalKiller · 23/02/2020 19:29

Betty's is the most overra place ever
I like the castle museum without kids. You get more time to look properly

I've just done this - we did a tour of the Minister, Barley Hall, a wander around the shambles, dinner at a tapas bar. We did yorvik too but that may count as too kiddy!

EvaHarknessRose · 23/02/2020 19:52

Cafe Concerto for coffee or lunch.

Went to a tapas place for the evening that was nice - can't remember the name but there's two I think.

Do a ghost walk.

Yes to the walls - especially if you can do it as the sun goes down, for excellent photo opportunities!

I think the park I mentioned might be Museum Gardens - it's lovely.

ChocoChunk1 · 23/02/2020 20:42

Clifford's Tower, Yorvik and Castle museums, walls walk

DrCoconut · 23/02/2020 20:47

Its a greene King pub but I really liked Lendal Cellars. Apparently there is a tea room near Betty's that is cheaper and just as good.

LtJudyHopps · 23/02/2020 20:54

There’s a Thai Tapas place - it was different and really good food.
Also eaten in Cut & Craft and it was good steak!

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 23/02/2020 21:05

Depends on when you're coming! The walls close during bad weather, and the area near the river is flooded at the moment, so you won't be able to do a lot round there. Foodwise, I like Lucia on Swinegate, nice wine there too. Drinks at the House of the Trembling Madness (the original one on Stonegate for preference, but the new one on Lendal is also fun). Barley Hall is lovely and a bit less busy than some other attractions.

N0ManJan · 23/02/2020 21:05

Cut and Craft is very reasonably priced and absolutely great food. You can’t book ahead so yo u just arrive and there’s sometimes a wait on a weekend but always so worth it.
I wouldn’t say Betty’s is worth queuing outside, it’s more to stop you’ve been if that makes sense? If you can afford to prebook and beat the queues you get a much better experience.
There’s also plenty of cocktail bars
(Evil Eye is my favourite)
Definitely go along the shambles, to the Minster, walk the walls there’s so many things to do that doesn’t cost a lot.

CouldBeOuting · 23/02/2020 21:56

We were there last weekend. Wasn’t impressed with Jorvik but the York Castle Museum was very good as is the rail museum (if you like that sort of thing). We actually ate in Ask Italian which is an amazing old building. Betty’s in Harrogate is lovely but can’t comment on the York one. The Shambles is fun. We enjoyed Treasurers House but we are history nuts. Despite the press claiming that York was flooded we had no trouble and even did a riverside walk without getting wet!

usernotfound0000 · 24/02/2020 20:17

We recently did a chocolate making workshop at York Cocoa House which was really good and yummy!
