Car insurance renewal

DorsetCamping · 23/02/2020 16:55

My car insurance renewal is due 28 Feb and I will be changing insurers as my current one has given a ridiculously high premium (£100s more despite no claims Hmm)

However I have just received a "thanks for your renewal" email and the premium is showing as being scheduled to leave my credit card account tomorrow!

Is there anything I can do? Surely they shouldn't be taking money until the policy renewal date is due? Will ring 1st thjng tomorrow to try and cancel but it would Be useful to know where I stand legally. We are talking over £900! Shock

Did you have it set up as automatic renewal? Do you have online access to your insurance company to cancel it that way?

DorsetCamping · 23/02/2020 17:22

Have just called my credit card company who say it is set as an automatic renewal and I'll need to contact the insurer in the first instance. I don't ever recall agreeing to a subscription, primarily has we switch each year. Regardless; to take the money 5 days early?!

I can't do anything now until tomorrow morning as their offices are shut.

All car insurance polices are set to auto renew to stop people being uninsured, you should have a 14 day period in which you can cancel and get a refund. Depends on insurer but that's generally how it works.

dementedpixie · 23/02/2020 17:54

Can you not go online to your car insurer and change details there?

DorsetCamping · 23/02/2020 18:08

It won't let me make any changes on line as it says the new policy is now in progress.

Usually there is something in the policy that lets you know you need to decline a renewal 14 days prior to the date

When you got the renewal letter it must have said something about ringing them to cancel if you disagree ? Or via an email

Who is the insurer?

Danni91 · 23/02/2020 18:52

This is a screenshot of an old email I had from Acorn about 2 years ago, its miles down in the renewal email but it is there.

Have you missed something similar?

Yes you're right @Danni91, just found an email from last week saying the money can be taken up to 5 days before policy renewal. Sad

However I've also found this in the T&Cs so hoping I can cancel and get a refund minus the admin fee

Shouldn't be an admin fee if its before the actual date of you using it, fingers crossed!

Hope you manage to sort it hassle free Smile

DorsetCamping · 23/02/2020 19:50

Good point! Thanks for the advice

It's fine it's not the renewal date yet so you can still cancel the renewal don't worry. And no there shouldn't be any admin fees purely because it's not the renewal date yet

DorsetCamping · 23/02/2020 20:29

So do they just refund the money then?

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 23/02/2020 20:35

Yes if they've taken it they'll refund it. If it was even a day after the renewal it would be different but if you let them know before the renewal date they'll cancel the renewal and refund the money if taken

DorsetCamping · 23/02/2020 20:54

Big relief! Thanks All Thanks

You have up to 14 days after the renewal date to cancel and get your money back in full (distance selling regulations). Just give them a call tomorrow.

purpleme12 · 23/02/2020 21:10

Yes but depending on the company if it's already renewed they may keep an admin fee still. But that depends who it is

dementedpixie · 24/02/2020 12:48

@DorsetCamping did you get it sorted?

DorsetCamping · 24/02/2020 13:35

Yes! Policy cancelled but still a bit nervous about the pending amount showing against my credit card.
