This is the job / occupation of my great grandfather in the 1901 census. We can't decipher it! He was a labourer in 1891 and a boat loader in 1911. So it will be something manual.

Mussel impeller. Is that a thing?

almightygirl · 23/02/2020 15:27

Have you tried searching on this website? search.findmypast.co.uk/search-world-records/1901-england-wales-and-scotland-census

Try posting in on Reddit. There is a sub for handwriting.

First part reads a 'Barrel' to me - last bit obviously 'ler' - it's what he was doing to the barrels that is a mystery Grin

KittenVsBox · 23/02/2020 15:34

I'd go with Barrel something.
Not sure what the first letter of the second word could be. Any clues elsewhere on the sheet?

starlingsintheslipstream · 23/02/2020 15:38

There was a thread on here earlier posted by someone who was transcribing census records. Can't remember the title but have a search and I'm sure they'll help.

Barrel dimpeller ?

BalloonSlayer · 23/02/2020 15:50

I think the first word is Mussel as what other posters think are "r" s are not like the rs in laborer or loader.

Mussel importer? with an extraneous L so it says importler?

toffeeghirl · 23/02/2020 15:51

Panel dimpler

earlydoors42 · 24/02/2020 16:01

Thank you all! I have tried on the other thread as well.

My dad has gone down the rest of the sheet trying to identify letters in other words, and decided that this occupation has 2 x the letter k. So he has decided it is "brick maker", as there was a brick works near where they lived (Bulkington at the time) and he was an unskilled labourer.

Having gone through all the census jobs on this list, the only ones that would fit ( assuming the first entry is crossed out) are Waller, Walker and Waulker.
