iPhone 11 is it worth it (currently have iPhone SE - 9th generation)

I have x2 phones - i) a personal Nokia phone - NOT a smart phone , and ii) a work iPhone SE.

We are allowed to use the work iPhone for moderate personal use.

But now I find I am using more work iPhone for more than moderate use (I suspect). Find I am using it for everything / things I didn’t know what I would - eg torch, mirror, maps & navigation, whats app etc, mumsnetting (!), plant identification apps, web surfing etc. And am now using it exclusively to take photographs - ie no longer use my camera.

(Am quite good at not using it for personal calls though). And of course use it loads for work and work emails - it’s principle use.

So I think I need either to cut down on use of my work,iPhone or buy one for personal use.

The work iPhone is an iPhone SE which is apparently 9th generation.

A friend has an iPhone 11 and I couldn’t believe the quality of the pictures that can be taken - especially ones take in low lighting. I think they cost around £1,000 if you buy it outright!

So my question really is around whether the iPhone is worth it? Appreciate that’s a very subjective and personal question.

Maybe to put it another way. Is there an appreciable difference between the iPhone SE and the iPhone 11?

I do like Apple products so would prefer to keep with an iPhone than a non iPhone. (but I mean £1,000 for a phone Shock)

I had a 6 and upgraded to an 11 and for photo and battery life a,one, it’s worth it.

Aridane · 23/02/2020 12:21

Did you buy it outright or get one of those package deals?

And did you get the smallest (and most expensive!) iPhone 11, the middle size or the rather large one?

What is battery life like?

DH is obsessed with Apple products, but he isn't replacing his current iPhone until the new one comes out in September, because it will hopefully support 5G.

FlabberMcBlasted · 23/02/2020 12:54

The photo quality is very good. I have stopped using my proper digital camera now.

My phone is heavily used for photos and day to day use. Not phone calls. The battery happily lasts two days with spare. Haven’t gone longer than that!

I really like mine. We paid outright for it. I believe it was around £800

FlabberMcBlasted · 23/02/2020 12:55

The difference with the 11 is that the whole screen is used now. No home button and a thin border. Everything else is screen.

winterinmadeira · 23/02/2020 13:00

Yes. I had an iPhone 6s and the battery was dying - this 11 pro is amazing! I bought it outright and kept my sim only plan which works for me

Aridane · 23/02/2020 13:02

I will be going away for x2 months in April / May and was wondering whether to splurge on an iPhone 11 before then to accompany my trip of a lifetime!

Unless you’re a semi-pro photographer or above (so use a very serious camera very well), I would. It’s so worth it for the camera. You can pay around £30 per month for the 11 from Apple (total cost just under £750), then have a SIM-only tariff completely separately. Do it!

GreenTulips · 23/02/2020 13:35

Just brought the kids iPhone X @£400

It’s good and there’s not much between that and the 11

Do a compare online

babasaclover · 23/02/2020 13:35

I get a new iPhone every couple of years and the photos are always amazing. The iPhone X or 10 has portrait mode and that is when it really started to get better noticeably different.

Order it from a catalogue such as very on 0% for 12 months, then just divide the cost down and pay off every month cheaper than having a phone contract

Aridane · 23/02/2020 13:39

@GreenTulips - I had though that it’s only the iPhone 11 that is able to do the night time / low light photos - os can the iPhone 10 / X do the same?

So the choice is between buying the phone outright (and then separately buying a SIM card and calls / data package) and buying everything bundled into one package (ie phone, SIM card and data / calls)?

HoldMyLobster · 23/02/2020 13:52

I bought my 11 for $749. There was a cheaper one with less memory available for $700. Are they really £1000 in the uk? That seems an awful lot.

HoldMyLobster · 23/02/2020 13:53

And yes, it was worth it IMO. The photos are amazing especially in low light.

GaaaaarlicBread · 23/02/2020 13:55

I have the iPhone 11 too and the battery alone is something I rave about . I have 4G on all day at work and browse the web on my lunch breaks , and 7 hours later when I’m back home (even after listening to music ) my battery is on 80%. The camera is also amazing. Highly recommend

RustyBear · 23/02/2020 14:00

I got the iPhone 11 in December and I love the camera (the 11pro would have been even better, but I didn't think I could manage the extra £320). I paid £879 at the Apple store and £14 a month (plus £5 for my Apple Watch) with O2 for unlimited texts & minutes + 4gb data

RustyBear · 23/02/2020 14:03

My phone is 256Gb, by the way, and I've used 125 so far

ItStartedWithAKiss241 · 23/02/2020 14:07

I have an iPhone 11pro (I think?) and it’s definitely worth it!
Photo quality is amazing and battery life is much better. I’m very happy with it.
I didn’t pay £1000 of course, I have a contract so just a small down payment x

Aridane · 23/02/2020 14:09

Thank you

Listening to what you say, it seems the iPhone 11 may be worth it for the camera alone.

(Plus for me means I would no longer be using my work phone excessively)

Looking at the details - and having tried out a friend’s - I think it would be the iPhone 11 Pro I would want - the one weighing in at over a £1,000! So with more functionality than iPhone 11 but not as huge as the iPhone 11 Pro Max

OP posts:
Aridane · 23/02/2020 14:11

I thought I would be getting lots of posts saying I would be crazy to spend c£1,000 on a phone and suggesting instead a non iPhone smart phone !!

OP posts:
RustyBear · 23/02/2020 14:12

If you can, I think I'd go for the Pro - I wish I could have, but didn't really think I could justify it, but it does have an optical zoom as well as the digital, which is much better for telephoto pictures. The ordinary 11 is very good though!

Aridane · 23/02/2020 14:21

OK - I am decided (I think) - iPhone 11 Pro it is Shock

Now to find out whether it works out cheaper to buy the phone outright and a separate calls / data package, or whether to buy a package deal thing.

Don’t mind higher upfront cost, just looking for cheaper deal overall

Also need to find out if I can carry over my old number across to new iPhone 11 (or whether I lose that when getting a new phone / new provider etc)

I had an iPhone 6s but it was really struggling since the most recent updates so I got a new iPhone 11 64gb. It was £729 outright. It’s great. I did consider getting the iPhone X but a saving of less than £100 for an old model which will become defunct more quickly wasn’t worth it. I only replace my phone when it is dying and always buy outright and regularly shop around for the best SIM only deal.

It’s very easy to keep your number. I’ve had the same number since my first ever phone over 20 years ago!
