VBAC after 2 C-Sections

I am pregnant with my 3rd child, this was not planned but we're happy. However I have two previous C sections. First for failure to progress and the hospital intervened too much with, breaking waters, inducement and epidural, all recommended by them not asked for but I was in labour in total for 6 days. Second baby was breech (feet first) I went into labour the day before my c section was booked and dilated well but still she didn't turn.
I want to try for a vaginal birth this time round but I know they will want me to have another section. Has anyone got any success stories, hints and tips to heading for a VBAC and 2 sections?

Bumping this for you, OP. Hopefully someone who can help will be about this morning.

Will be reading with interest as I’m the other way - currently fighting for my 3rd section, they want me to have a vbac. Frustrating really.

I’ve had one vaginal birth (ending in third degree tear) and one elective section. I would choose ten elective sections over a natural labour. Honestly, they’re fantastic. And bearing in mind how high risk you’d be, OP, I think you’d be mad to try for a vaginal birth. They’re nothing to write home about. They’re not essential to the female experience. Have a nice calm planned section and count yourself lucky to miss out on all the horrific bits of a vaginal birth - which is all of it Grin

My hospital said no to a vbac after two sections. You might find it's not something they support?

Beingbobbles · 24/02/2020 10:30

I hated both sections, one emergency one was just full of fear and the second just made me sad and I got an infection so my experiences have not been anything I'd wanna experience again. The recovery time is long and I have two kids already that I need to look after so I don't wanna be laid up for two weeks 🙁
This is something I really want to do and I don't want the choice taken away from me.

I had one emcs and when I was due to have dd midwife was very pushy for a Vbac even though I was abit worried about it as I don’t tend to go into labour naturally, only have once out of 4, all others have needed to be induced. vbac ended up not working as didn’t even go into labour at all despite 2 weeks over due and being Induced (by the balloon method, which was awful) doubt I would try for a vbac again or if I would even be allowed.

I was encouraged to have a c section after I’d already had two.

Remember your body typically does the same thing so if you didn’t progress before, the likelihood is that you won’t this time.

LuckyLickitung · 24/02/2020 11:55

I had a VBAC after a first EMCS (long labour, slow progress of back to back baby, 2 hours of pushing, baby distressed, my body developing complications)

I wanted the VBAC to deal with the mental baggage of spending so long in labour and not quite finishing the job off. The odds were very favourable following my previous spontaneous, fully dilated previous effort.

The reality was that although the labour was vastly better, the heartrate became difficult to monitor during pushing so they had to assume that it could be an imminent risk of uterine rupture and I was whisked off to theatre again for a CS. DS2 was just in the awkward spot in the birth canal between a rough CS and a rough forceps. I got rough forceps and a 3rd degree tear.
I was put on laxitives and didn't leave the house for the next month and toileted in the shower. My SPD was aggravated and I had to crawl up the stairs some days and was still in too much pain to walk home from the shops 3 weeks later. My undercarriage had an infection and the community MW was aghast at the quality of stitching, even more so when I said it was in theatre and therefore by a senior doctor; she said she would complain about the state of it.

I get the emotional drive for VBAC, but it's a gamble and there is such a range of vaginal birth outcomes, including many that are worse than the typical outcomes from ELCS with a low-ish risk of complications. VBAC has high odds of unpleasant instrumental or EMCS delivery because there is no patience at any hint of fetal distress. VBA2C is a higher risk again.

If I had another baby, my choices would be open as I statistically count as a sucessful VBAC, but frankly for my body, I don't trust my body's ability to push out babies without drama and complications so ELCS is a much more reliable bet against the range of complications and injuries avaliable against the low odds of calmly breathing baby out.

  • not 3 weeks later, 3 MONTHS later. The VBAC recovery was much longer and more painful than the labour/ EMCS that had me in HDU for 36 hours with a failing liver.
Treacletoots · 24/02/2020 11:59

I'd go for what is safest, for both of you. Whilst rare, ruptures do happen during vbac, and can kill both of you, and are more likely each time youve had to have a csection.

I had an elective and it was absolutely fine, and would beg borrow or steal to have the option again over an unpredictable vaginal, birth.

FraterculaArctica · 24/02/2020 12:00

Do you have a choice of hospital OP? As you can see on this thread hospitals are very variable in their policies on VBA2C.

Ohhgreat · 24/02/2020 12:12

I completely get where you are coming from OP, I'm the same.
Chances of successful VBAC are higher if you have fully dilated previously. If you haven't, the likelihood is you wont again. As such I would go elective caesarean.
VBAC is no guarantee you'll recover quicker than a section at any rate. You haven't failed however you give birth, try not to be so hard on yourself.
