Please no hate just want advise... Can you loose weight in pregnancy safely? I'm worried about how I will cope and how I'm going to look, I think I will just look really fat not pregnant, brings me to the point of tears as was trying to loose weight then found out I was pregnant

First off, massive congrats on your pregnancy.

Check out this website, I’ve seen it come up on twitter from time to time bigbirthas.co.uk/.

I think you need to seek advise about your weight loss. I was told you can mitigate some of the associated complications with higher BMI by maintaining rather than gaining weight in pregnancy, keeping active, eating healthy stuff etc.

Is this your first pregnancy? How exciting for you.

Please try not to worry too much, I’m very overweight and currently 22 weeks pregnant.
They will keep a close eye on you and baby but other than that you just have to try and remain happy and calm and focus on your new baby growing.
Some plus size women do get proper bumps and others don’t it depends on lots of things but mostly where you carry your weight. I have a big tummy anyway so I don’t look that much different yet. It does make me sad sometimes that I don’t have a distinctive bump, but really who cares? It doesn’t mean your baby will be any more/less happy/healthy and that’s the most important thing.

I really recommend the Facebook group ‘UK plus size pregnancy and beyond’

Please don’t be so hard on yourself ❤️

I was a size 20 and pregnant.
Two things cropped up. Firstly I had to see a consultant because my BMI was over 35. This involved a chat and I had to sit on a couch and bend my spine forward to see if there was adequate space for a needle in case I needed a c section. (Which I ended up having).
Secondly I had very very mild gestational diabetes which I had to see a consultant about. I basically followed a low carb healthy diet and ended up losing weight and probably lighter at the end of the pregnancy than the start!
I then breastfed and managed to lose wuite a bit more.
I looked obviously pregnant but I guess this is different person to person depending on your shape, the way your bump develops etc.
Congratulations!!!

I am very much plus size. I had a higher dose of folic acid, low dose aspirin, several a glucose tolerance test and additional growth scans. DS was a very very healthy weight when he was delivered by C-section at 39 weeks and is still a great big boy now at 3 months. They'll keep an extra eye on you OP but there's no need to panic.

amazedmummy · 22/02/2020 19:51

Oh also I was the size of a bloody house and very much looked pregnant.

Eyeamhere · 22/02/2020 19:54

Something else I remembered. For my first I wanted a water birth. I was a size 18-20 then and there was a bit of a discussion between the nurses as to whether they would let me as they were worried about getting me out quickly if needed.
I did end up having a water birth and it was fine.

Please don't worry. Focus all your energy on the beautiful baby you are growing! I was around 130kg when I was pregnant with both my babies. I had completely normal pregnancy the first time and just a liver complication the second time. I was seen more regularly by the midwives and had consultant appointments as well as extra scans towards the end to check on baby's growth. My bump became 'pregnant looking' around 24 weeks to me but other said definitely before that. I quite liked it when no one knew I was pregnant it felt like a special little secret between me and bubba!

@Zlong94 I was never actually sick. I felt sick until around 12/13 weeks but I was never actually sick. Totally normal.

Hey girl,

My nine week old is currently sleeping on me. I was 20 stone when I was pregnant and safely lost weight during and am now 16 stone.

I did not put pressure on myself to do so, I simply just adopted a healthier lifestyle and making sure I was doing all I could for my son. I made sure I had lot of vegetables rather than greasy takeaways and went for lots of walks and the weight has slowly been coming off.

What helped me was that, like you, I hated how I looked and felt and that is not the life I want for my son. I am getting healthy so I can really enjoy his childhood.

Being big will not necessarily make pregnancy harder. Mine was extremely straight forward, I didnt have any GD or SPD. I did have to have an emergency c section and as I have a little fat apron (sexy!) They had to do the incision on my pooch rather where they normally would which makes me look pretty deformed. This is because the normal cut spot wouldn't have had enough air.

Congratulations and good luck.
