Best 'period pants' and supermarket single duvets?

pinboard · 22/02/2020 12:26

I need to buy two items this weekend.

Quite a few 'period pants' for my dd with ASD so want to get good quality ones that work / are on offer

Also, she's had a big nosebleed overnight and duvet destroyed so where to buy a cheap(ish) single duvet?

I can get to Asda / Morrisons / Tesco / Homebargains etc

Anyone know where I can get cheap weighted blankets also?

I'm pooped as been up all night so brain not working.
If anyone has any suggestions I'd be (pathetically) grateful

Ive only ever tried Modi body pants and can highly recommend. They're not cheap, but i see them as an investment! They are so much more comfortable and imagine a good choice for a child with additional needs.
They do sell a pack of 5, which are cheaper than buying individually. I started off with 5 and then bought 5 more as its a bit of a faff trying to wash and dry 5 to last an entire period. I have a 3 day period and 10 pants are enough, if longer, youd either need more, or wash and dry more. Its generally the drying which is the pain as they take a while to dry and they cant be tumble dried.

Just bought dd some Modibodi knickers (boy shorts) I can't say what they're like as period pants as dd hasn't had a proper period yet but they feel nice and I like that the "pad" comes up high at the front and back so she shouldn't have any leaks. I bought the shorts just for the added material round the tops of her legs and crotch area.
Heard nothing but good reviews.

As for the quilts I usually buy from Asda. Ds2 used to pee the bed so the cheap £6 single quilts were used what I opted for so I could replace or have as a spare.

Also, I'm sure home bargains were selling weighted blankets but I don't know if they were a one off but dh also mentioned buying one so I'd imagine he saw it on HUKD.

I would wash the duvet, not replace, wash it in cold so the stain doesn't set- DD has loads of nosebleeds, the blood comes out no problem (I use fairy washing liquid, not daz or biological etc).
Are you really going to replace the duvet every time she leaks in her period?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/02/2020 17:23

People have been saying that the Sainsbury's period pants are very good, they are certainly a lot cheaper than Modibodi. I have Modibodi (bought before Sainsbury's started doing them) and find them great.

MatterhornMadness · 22/02/2020 17:24

And Sainsbury's are now doing period pants, there was a long thread recently (called "Sainsbury's are now doing period pants!" Or something on those lines). Not sure of price, as I didn't click through to the Sainsbury's site, and I haven't seen any at my branch, though TBF I haven't been on the sanpro aisle this week.

MatterhornMadness · 22/02/2020 17:25

Is your DD amenable to the pants, btw? My DD also has asd, has had a couple or periods, but definitely isn't up for tampons. I'm not sure how she'd feel about pants, as the blood stays there...

LynetteScavo · 22/02/2020 17:34

Wash the duvet on cold with a bio detergent- give it a bit of a cold scrub first. If you wash it on hot the blood cooks and stains.I've never not been able to shift blood.

Ah, thanks for replies :)

I cant fit the duvet into my washing machine sadly or I would have stuck it on a cold wash straight away.
I've cold hand scrubbed the corner bit and its not too bad with a freshly washed cover over - the nearest Launderette is 15miles away.
I will go on Monday and see what it costs to wash properly.
I was thinking a cheapie 2nd duvet is not a bad idea anyway (cold house)..

ASD / periods - she's not up for tampons (and only 11 :( and hates the feel of pads so I thought the period knickers worth a try but her period goes on for about a week so Modibodi would be a big investment.

Goes off to look at Amazon for weighted blankets.

Thanks, all, sorry to have been such a wuss not to just crack on solo!

DD wears Modibod pants with no issues - wish we had these pants when we were that age!

MunchMunch · 22/02/2020 18:31

Not a wuss at all! Thanks to this thread I've found out Sainsbury's are doing period pants so I'm now off to google.

MatterhornMadness · 24/02/2020 10:13

There's quite a few threads on here about the reusable pads. They're made of fleece-type material, so very soft. I wonder if they would work for her?
I have to say I've been impressed at how my DD has coped with onset of periods. She freaks out about blood, even though she has regular nosebleeds, but has been surprisingly ok about her period. She uses the lillets teen pads, they're quite thin (when I think about the monstrosities I had to have at 12, great big mattresses, pre-bodyform or always! Is it any wonder I went onto tampons almost immediately)

Do please share any weighted blankets you come across, as I am interested in those. DD has a velvet/Sherpa throw over her duvet ATM, and it has helped her sleep, but once it's warmer that will be too warm for her I'm sure.

supermarket duvets - look that they are washable and tumble dryer safe.
we once got an emergency duvet for visitors in a supermarket that had a sort of plastic outer, similar to those tyvec envelopes.
it wasn't washable so had to be binned after it got soiled.
