Lidl; what should I buy?

Hi folks

V exited about the new Lidl that is about to open fairly near to us. It seems really big from the outside so before I go in and lose myself for 4 hours perusing EVERY item on EVERY shelf, what would be your 'must haves?'

Thanks in advance

the big jars of roasted peppers are great

Allow another 3 hours for the queue to check out!

I rarely visit our local one as the queue to pay is quite ridiculous.

Forrandomposts · 22/02/2020 12:51

I agree bakery is good but have to say one the whole I find it pretty poor compared to Aldi!

TheMemoryLingers · 22/02/2020 12:55

Allow another 3 hours for the queue to check out!

And hone your bagging up skills because Lidl checkout operators are fast ! They have to be because they always have a minimum of checkouts open.

The portuguese custard tarts in the bakery are good.

goldenorbspider · 22/02/2020 12:59

Following, interested to hear how it compares to Aldi

Canned tomatoes
Conserve
Passata
Parmesan
Dishwasher tablets
Washing powder
Vegetable crisps
Sun dried tomatoes
Their deluxe pasta is good too...

WitsEnding · 22/02/2020 13:05

I like their fruit and veg, but you need to menu plan around what's good when you go in. All the usual basics are fine. Washing powder really good value, as is the wine.

Top favourite: full fat plain Greek yogurt in the tubs.

polkadotpj · 22/02/2020 13:07

Cupboard stuff like rice, tinned tomatoes, beans, soup, tinned mushy peas and beans. Not their pasta though. It's nasty. Their fresh pasta is ace though. Cheese and yoghurts great too. And bread. All the bread. Their foul and their cling is great as is the wine. Mi don't like the veg but berries are ok mostly

I like the potato salad with crem fraiche and the isle of randomness.

BigFatLiar · 22/02/2020 13:18

Just your normal shop though I find their choice in some things limited. I'm no gourmet so don't really notice much difference between their products and anyone else's.

Glad my children are grown for I seem to be attracted to the aisles of tat thinking of the toys they'd have liked Grin. What I did like in their aisle of tat was their all metal casserole which they had back in stock this week.

Elouera · 22/02/2020 15:24

I always check out online what is in this weeks aisle on randoms. Its easy to just pick things up when there, but sometimes when you actually look online and compare, they aren't the best value.

Bakery
Shortbread biscuits
Lasagne

malovitt · 22/02/2020 15:32

I've used the Lidl washing liquid for years, it's really good value and washes really well.
Also their olive oil

ExpletiveDelighted · 22/02/2020 15:48

The bakery stuff is good. My rule of thumb is that the more processed things are the worse they are likely to be. So fruit, veg, meat, fish, cheese, milk, plain yogurt, flour, eggs, tinned tuna all that sort of stuff are ok. Cereals, biscuits, ready meals, crisps, sauces etc - generally not very good. You get what you pay for.

OkMaybeNot · 22/02/2020 15:55

NUTS. Big pouches of nuts. I buy their almonds every week, they're amazing and so much cheaper than anywhere else.

Their cream cheese is SUPER cheap and I prefer it to phili.

Their naice ham. Not cheap, but gorgeous and a huge family pack so great value compared to everywhere else.

Kabanossi. Garlicky mini kabanos, like a nice version of pepperami (y'know, with actual meat). Kids love them in their lunches.

OkMaybeNot · 22/02/2020 15:56

Oh and their garlic crackers. Soooo good.

Boiledeggandtoast · 22/02/2020 16:18

J D Gross 70% dark chocolate is very good (and Fairtrade). Also their organic eggs are so much cheaper than Tesco or Sainsbury's.

CwtchesCuddles · 22/02/2020 16:38

Go in with an open mind, give everything a try and make your own mind up. I do most of my grocery shopping there and like the fruit and veg. My local one is really busy and gas a vert fast turnover of fruit and veg.
