Usually a planner when it comes to holidays booked this one in early November, and for various reasons (pregnancy sickness) have not actually managed to plan anything outside of the basic vatican, catacombs, colloseum stuff.

Food recommendations especially, and any hidden gems, anything from shopping to sightseeing.

We are going for 4 days, breakfast is included in our hotel and our total budget is €600 for both of us.

Grazie Grin

Ostia Antica is amazing.

ribena71 · 22/02/2020 22:07

Definitely do the climb to the top of the dome at St Peter's Basilica...the views honestly took my breath away!

We had a great lunch here before going to the Vatican Museum:

Also would recommend the Domus Aurea, very near the Coliseum. It's Nero's palace, underground. You have to book. There's an amazing VR experience towards the end of the tour. The tour groups are small so you can ask loads of questions - guide was excellent. We were a group of adults and teenagers and all loved it.

We also loved Ostia Antica, and a cycle ride along the cobbled Appian Way (but you may not feel like a bumpy cycle ride if you're pregnant!)
Hope you have a wonderful time.

I love Rome - so much to do/see and it’s so easy to get around despite what I’d heard. So jealous !!

Redrosesandsunsets · 22/02/2020 22:34

Yes to St Peters Basillica - there is so much to see I don’t even want to influence you. I don’t think you can go wrong whatever you choose to do.

Goodness! I do envy your - I am sure you will have a super time. I adored the Vatican City and seeing the Spanish Steps. I am ashamed to say that I did not know about the Cat Sanctuary. I shall be sure to visit.

I am not treading on your toes/post but if any MNetters are going to visit the Acropolis (Athens) at any time there are wonderful friendly stray dogs there and I took food for them and helped where I could.

Again, have a super time.

Book tickets for the Villa Borghese. Make sure you go to the Pantheon and Palazzo Doria Pamphilj. Have some unusual ice creams like pine nut or walnut. I'm jealous!

Hope it's fab we go on Friday!!
Have booked opera, Vatican, coliseum and a food tour. Let me know how the weather is!

Toddlerteaplease · 23/02/2020 01:51

I second Ostia Antica it is amazing. Also the square coliseum at EUR if you like Art Deco architecture. If you can get onto a Scavi tour do it. There is a Necropolis under St Peters and you get to see the bones of St Peter. It's absolutely incredible. Segway tours are a great way to see the city.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/02/2020 01:52

Don't bother with the Vatican museum. I was very underwhelmed by the Sistine chapel.

Oh, thank god I'm not the only one who wasn't impressed by the Sistine chapel!! I liked the corridors of the Vatican but the rest of it...meh! Also, the food that was included in the combined entrance and meal ticket was absolutely crap!

CormoranStrike · 23/02/2020 14:46

Oh I love Rome! Street pizza is my top tip, bought by the Pantheon in particular

Not wanting to be ‘that guy’ but I would be inclined to stay in Rome. Coronavirus: Italy imposes strict lockdown in outbreak hotspots www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-51602007

@flamingoandjohn
Heard this on radio this evening and OP was who I thought of too!

I was in Rome a few years ago with my friend who had food allergies. The soy gelato from Blue Ice are great and really filling. Also our favourite restaurant was Bibliothe. It's Indian/ vegetarian and based in an old book shop. The staff were so friendly and because there was a delay with our main meal they kept bringing us lovely little tasters from the menu. The best original chai tea as well. We also loved Villa d'este but you probably don't have time to travel out of the city.
