Does this bruising look normal after DP's blood draw? (Pic)

DP got his blood taken on Monday by my midwife (we are having additional screening due to antibodies in my blood and now checking his), and his arm is painful and looks like this. She got it first time.

I get my bloods done every few weeks and it's never been this bad for me!

Is this normal?

I've had worse once, entire lower arm was black. Its blood pooling under the skin where the vein has leaked. It will dissipate.

EBearhug · 22/02/2020 09:46

I have had worse, when I had blood taken by a trainee nurse. But that was a one-off. I'd probably mention it to the midwife, in case she can better check the bleeding has stopped in future.

I had this once (I've had quite a lot of blood tests). It took a week to go down.

So not 'normal' but not a cause for concern unless he has been bruising a lot in general lately (could mean low platelets)

It varies enormously.

Tangerinesandlemons · 22/02/2020 09:52

It looks a little worse than mine is usually, but there is nearly always some bruising. Perhaps the vein was difficult to find, and more than one attempt was made. It should go down in a few days.

Thanks for the replies - I'll go and put his mind at ease!

The midwife did make a jokey comment while doing it saying she wasn't used to men's arms, so maybe she did have a bit of trouble.

This happened to me once when I bent my arm straight after. Nurse said " you shouldn't have done that!"

gavisconismyfriend · 22/02/2020 10:14

Did they put a plaster on it and did the bruising appear after the plaster was taken off? Ridiculously it is sometimes ripping off that tiny plaster that results in a bug spread of bruising!

fee1234 · 22/02/2020 10:22

@gavisconismyfriend yes they put a plaster on straight away and he took it off that evening, but he's complained of it being really sore since it was just done.

It's normal (but at the bad end of normal).

TopShelf · 22/02/2020 10:41

It could be two separate things, the needle may have hit a nerve.
I had this once and it took quite a long while for the nerve to heal.

The bruising is probably where he bled under the skin where it's leaked after the
blood was drawn. but shouldn't really be that painful on its own.
