EMMA mattress for a bad back?

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 22/02/2020 09:09

I've been looking at the excellent reviews online for the EMMA mattress as it seems to be highly recommended for side sleepers and those who have a bad back, which is me on both counts.

I've tried one in store and it feels okay, as far as you can tell after 15 minutes in store. Has anyone bought an EMMA specifically for the pressure relieving support for a bad back and loved it?

TIA

I bought a re-conditioned Emma from Wowcher and absolutely love it, I'm a side sleeper and DP has a bad back and we both sleep much better. We went for re-conditioned as both felt the 'new' price was a lot of outlay for something that may not work...

I've suffered from back problems for decades and, more recently a painful hip/leg when in bed. I sleep mainly on my side. I'm absolutely delighted to report that these problems have massively reduced since I started sleeping on an Emma mattress in December.

I had reason to sleep in my old bed a couple of weeks ago, on a memory foam mattress which I always thought was reasonably comfy (though quite old I'll admit). After a couple of nights I could feel my back stiffening again and I was conscious of having to keep shifting position to relieve it. Couldn't wait to get back to Emma!

I'm absolutely over the moon with mine. And I'm sure they say you can return them if not satisfied.

I’m pretty sure I have one of those, I’ll check when hubby gets up. If it is it was great at the beginning but mine has a dip where I sleep, am slightly overweight, and I definitely can feel it, so much so that I sometimes sleep tail to my husband as it’s not very comfy, we’ve had it less than a year... depending on how much you want to spend, check out Hypnos mattresses apparently they are very good and you can buy them through premier inn slightly cheaper I believe. We were given our bu our neighbour who’d hardly used hers (Emma) and found it too hot (I must add she had it very well protected before passing it to us)

And you quite often get discount leaflets in magazines - worth looking out for them. I think I had one with 30% off.

I have an eve, not an Emma.

One thing I will say though is that the bed makes a huge difference.
We have two beds. One has sprung slats and one has solid fixed slats. We have an eve mattress on both. Dh finds the solid slat bed much better for his back.

Medievalist · 22/02/2020 09:31

I don't think you're meant to put foam mattresses on a sprung base - only a solid one.

Interesting to hear pp's comments about finding it hot. I've been thinking of swapping my duvet for a lighter one as I'm quite warm in bed now.

Amfeelingfline · 22/02/2020 09:48

Scrap that, mine’s a eve too...

FlamingoAndJohn · 22/02/2020 10:13

You can put a foam mattress on any type of bed.

UhKevin · 22/02/2020 11:25

We have an Emma and I would like to torch the fucking thing. One year old. Dipped like fuck (neither of us overweight). I’ve got a bad lower back for the first time in my life.

Medievalist · 22/02/2020 15:39

You can put a foam mattress on any type of bed.

You can put it on the kitchen table if you want, but all the advice I had from places like m n s and John Lewis when I was bed hunting a few months ago was to put it on a slatted base or an unsprung divan.

FlamingoAndJohn · 22/02/2020 15:44

What is there other than a slatted base or divan?
Am I being really dim and forgetting an entire bed type?

Medievalist · 22/02/2020 15:48

You can get 2 types of divan - a sprung divan (so has some give if you sit directly on it) or one with a hard top (which is essentially a hard surface covered with material).

FlamingoAndJohn · 22/02/2020 15:55

Ah I see. I’ve not got a divan. Mine are bed frames.

MonsteraCheeseplant · 22/02/2020 17:25

We just bought an Eve hybrid as it was the top rated mattress by Which? And I couldn't decide between springs and foam so thought that we might as well get a mattress with both! I'm a side sleeper, DH sleeps on his back. Very happy with it, plus it has a 100 day money back trial period. I haven't woken with back pain since.

Medievalist · 22/02/2020 22:36

If you do decide to get an Emma mattress op, I've just spotted a flyer in today's Guardian which is offering 39% off with code WINTERDEAL39. It runs until 1 March but they seem to offer some sort of discount most of the time.

We have an Emma mattress and I love it!! It took a few weeks to get used to as to begin with it does feel rather firm but it's fantastic! We had ours whilst I was 28 weeks pregnant and throughout my pregnancy, I religiously slept on my side on the edge of the bed- this caused it to sag, we called the Emma team to explain and they sent a new one out that week and we haven't had any problems at all with this one. My partner did complain as he doesn't like a firm bed, we've now met in the middle with a mattress topper and both sleep very well.

safariboot · 23/02/2020 02:11

You get differences with frames too, some have rigid slats and some have springy ones. A sprung base, whether divan or frame, will make the bed softer with the same mattress.

Casino218 · 23/02/2020 02:29

I have a king Emma mattress and it's been fab. Had it about 2 years now. You can pay in instalments if required. It seems as good as the day we bought it.

FieldOfFlameAndHeather · 23/02/2020 08:53

Thanks everyone. I believe that slatted bases (either flat or slightly sprung) are considered better for memory foam mattresses for ventilation purposes.

I'm going to give it a try. The only thing that worries me is the soft edge. It does seem a bit too soft.

I believe that slatted bases (either flat or slightly sprung) are considered better for memory foam mattresses for ventilation purposes.

That was my very firm belief also until a few months ago when I trawled round lots of bedding depts and each one said memory foam was fine on a hard divan base. I even asked the people at Emma and they told me the same thing. 🤷‍♀️
