Stupidly been drinking while on AD

Started antidepressants last week, I never even thought to check if I could drink with them. Had far to much alcohol last night now I'm feeling like I'm having a panic attack. I can't sleep and my heart is racing and I've so much anxiety. Argh I'm supposed to be in work in a few hours 😟

You can drink on SSRIs. I take Citalopram and drink on those. But obviously alcohol is a depressant so it's not advisable to drink too much from that point of view. Take some deep breaths - three in, four out, if you feel panicky Flowers

Also I forgot to mention that the first week or so on ADs are terrible for heightening anxiety. It does settle down.

You'll be fine. No need for panic at all.

I drink on Chlomiperamine. It says not to but the doctor knows I do and says it's fine, they just make you more sleepy. You haven't done yourself any harm and I agree with what has been said, it's common to feel more anxious for a couple of weeks after starting them. Hope work is ok today.

I drank the most alcohol I have ever had while on SSRI's (I was depressed and in a bad place).

I didn't get panic attacks - but some SSRI's can make you more agitated so I could imagine if you're prone to PA's that might be the reason?

Hope you're ok.

TheNoiseHurts · 22/02/2020 07:11

Maybe consider not going into work though.

Not because of the booze but because that first week of AD's can be a bit tough.

Strongmummy · 22/02/2020 07:15

You can drink on them!!!!! However, if you’re just starting out with them your body/brain will need to adjust and you can get side effects. Plus booze will depress you.

I’d leave off alcohol until you’ve settled into the ADs. Plus ensure your alcohol intake is sensible

The GP/psycotherapist told my DS he can drink while on Sertraline, He just feels more tired afterwards and a bit more groggy the next morning (He only drinks at the weekend but does have quite a few!😏)
I think the reason you feel like you do is because you have only just started the AD, they take a few weeks to settle down. Don't panic about the drink Flowers

ToriaPumpkin · 22/02/2020 09:21

I take Sertraline and my Dr has said it's fine to drink on them. I have had what you describe though, I changed my dose and had a big night with a friend and woke up convinced I was going to die, my heart was pounding and I couldn't calm the panic. It did pass, and I've never had it since (Probably because I haven't drunk that much in one go since)

The first few weeks can be a nightmare, with heightened anxiety and feeling generally rubbish until your chemistry settles down. Go easy on yourself, and consider calling in sick for today to rest.

I drink moderately on Sertraline, but had horrendous nausea for the first month while my body adjusted- that might be what's happening to you op? Check for side effects on the leaflet.
