School ski trip question

m0therofdragons · 21/02/2020 18:21

Dd is mentioning she'd love to go on the school ski trip. She's at state school and they go in year 10 - she's year 8. I'm wondering how much standard school ski trips roughly are, and how much extra parents spend on renting ski stuff. Can anyone advise? I'm just after ballpark figures.

Our grandchildren’s state school ski trips cost around £850 -900.
This covers flights, accommodation, transfers, three meals a day, tuition, lift pass, equipment rental and entertainment/activities every evening.

As skiers ourselves, we recognise that this is very good value.

It is often possible to borrow ski clothes from friends, or buy cheaply second hand.

reluctantbrit · 21/02/2020 18:43

Ours was priced at £650 for a week. Extra costs would be lunch money and the actual clothing. Boots, helmet hire was included in the trip costs.

According to a colleague that sounded normal.

helpfulperson · 21/02/2020 18:46

About £900 including everything apart from clothing.

Ours was about £1000 by the time clothing, spending money etc had been factored in.

TrickyD · 21/02/2020 18:51

That’s a good price, reluctantbrit.
Ours did include lunches, also they go in the first week in February, the peak of the ski season. Often trips are cheaper at the end of the season, though snow can be scarce, or use coaches rather than flights.
motherofdragons, you could ask exactly what is included, when and where the trip is going to.
Our DGC’s school uses a fairly basic hotel in Serre Chevalier, but it is 50 metres from the major lift, so brilliantly convenient.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 21/02/2020 18:52

I’d agree with pp & assume around 1k all in by the time you’ve bought the bits she’ll need.

It was £800 for the 5 day 4 night trip to NYC when I was a secondary school.

A local state school are doing a y10 trip to Borneo next year, for 4.5k!

Christmashope19 · 21/02/2020 18:52

About £1000 all in that included food, lessons, travel and pocket money
We hired the sallopettes etc at a cost of around £50

itssquidstella · 21/02/2020 18:54

You can get ski gear really cheaply from Decathlon, so it shouldn't be too much to kit dc out.

clary · 21/02/2020 18:55

My DCs school it costs about £1k. It's in Europe and they go by coach so it takes them 27 hours, which I think is a bit much. I'm sure they enjoy it but I think for £1,000 I would rather fly on a ski trip with ds2 (obviously I would end up paying £1k too, but then I would also get to ski!). The trip is about 5-6 days so they only get 3-4 days actually on the snow. I imagine that includes hire and ski school but probs not lunch

TrickyD · 21/02/2020 18:57

TKMax is another good source of ski gear. H&M also used to do it, and DGD got some new salopettes from Lidl, £17.99. They had jackets and thermal layering stuff too.

Chasingsquirrels · 21/02/2020 18:58

DS is going in a few weeks.
It was £900 and includes all travel from and back to school, flights, 5hrs ski school for 5 days, lift passes, skis, boots & helmet, trousers & ski jacket hire, full board and some evening activities.
At the meeting we were told they can take some cash for personal spends, but £100 would be more than ample as it would really only be for sweets, gifts etc.

TrickyD · 21/02/2020 18:59

Clary, £1000 for a short trip by coach is not good!

Dogsaresomucheasier · 21/02/2020 19:02

Ours are £900 for 5 days skiing, travel, insurance, bed and board, pass, rental of helmet, boots and skis, then I spent about £300 on clothing. I couldn’t take them for that, (and I’m no skier, I wouldn’t want to.)

fedup21 · 21/02/2020 19:03

DN went last year. It was £1600 for the week, plus £250 for the clothes.

It was to Canada rather than Europe though.

user1471525753 · 21/02/2020 19:08

My DS is currently away skiing with the school in Italy. They went by coach & it was £1200Shock He is having the time of his life so I guess it's worth it

nodtik · 21/02/2020 19:37

My sons school - coming back tomorrow

£959 - February half term, most expensive week to ski in Europe!

6 days skiing
5 hours lessons per day
Full board accommodation
Ice skating
Bowling
But coach travel and ferry journey of 26 hours

Eldest son went and LOVED it - think it's good value actually

Youngest will go next year

Ski wear can be bought inexpensively if you shop around

samandpoppysmummy · 21/02/2020 19:38

DS (Y9) is going on a school ski trip to Italy. They fly there and back. It is £1100 and includes everything except the clothing which has cost me around £250. He was apparently the only Y9 boy going on the trip who had never skied before Confused (I'm pretty sure this is not true 😂). It was obviously going to be sooooo embarrassing for him having to start the week on the beginner slopes with the Y7s. So I have also been persuaded to spend £180 on 2 x two and a half hour lessons at the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead. He is was surprisingly grateful for this though as he will not now have to suffer the humiliation of anyone realising he belongs to a family who don't ski 😂. I'm just very relieved DD (Y8) was not interested in going too, it would have bankrupted me Grin

nodtik · 21/02/2020 19:38

And he's in Italy!

DragonNight · 21/02/2020 19:40

My DD has just come back from hers and it was £1100 plus ski wear. That was to Austria via coach with 5 days skiing in lessons.

clary · 21/02/2020 22:07

trickyd indeed it is not, which is why one of mine have gone (tho tbh only ds2 was ever interested)

BackforGood · 21/02/2020 22:27

Makes a big difference if they go in Feb 1/2 term holiday, or if they go during term time ?

Troels · 21/02/2020 22:54

My Dd (year 10) is on her way back from hers at the moment. (Andorra)
Her school always do all inclusive, it includes, travel, hotel, ski equipment, ski school/instructors every day, three meals a day and evening activities, and insurance for the trip, snow guarantee thing and medical.
This year it cost £1000 even, we had two years to pay for it. This is her second time, last time she was year 8 was Austria and cost £850.
They have a brilliant time well worth it. First time she had no girls from her year there, only boys, so shared with the year abover her and made new friends, this year her best friend went too.

OverByYer · 21/02/2020 22:57

As above about £1000. I’ve just bought ski wear online from Aldi £20 for a ski jacket, £20 salopettes

Troels · 21/02/2020 22:59

Trespass do a ski package each January, full outfit under £100 if you wait for it.
Dd is wearing the same stuff as last time she went, I shoped Aldi for her helmet, ski socks, base layer. Pants came from Amazon £12 most expensive was her jacket, she has ample boobage so needed a decent fit, Mountain warehouse sale on sale for £90, but it will last for years once washed and put in the wardrobe for next time. Snow boots are my old ones that have harldy been used and have lasted years too.

Africa2go · 21/02/2020 23:06

It depends on destination and how long. Our DCs state schools do Austria / Italy etc at about £800/900 but usually on a coach, and then US/Canada which is longer (6 days skiing but this year 2 nights in Montreal and 2 nights in Quebec). Thats nearly £3k.
