Scale and root planing - anybody had this done?

Has anybody had a scale and root planing for their periodontal disease? I think I might need to get this done for my chronic periodontal disease but I am absolutely terrified it will make my gum recession worse or make my teeth wobbly - any success stories would be greatly appreciated!!

I’ve had it done 3 times now, last time with antibiotic gel applied to the roots. Anaesthetic needed and 4 30 minute appointments to do a quarter of my mouth each time over 10 days. Left me feeling a bit crap, didn’t hurt once I was numbed. Worked in some places, not in others and now I’ve a hospital referral.
I’ve already lost a tooth to periodontal disease and I don’t want to lose any more.
Did not make them looser, swollen a bit after appts then gums where it worked tightened. Pockets where it did work down from 7/8 to 1/2

Changedmename1234 - thank you so much for replying and sorry to hear that you are battling this horrible thing. My teeth are literally all I can think of at the moment as I am absolutely terrified of losing my teeth. Could I just ask how you got a hospital referral? Was it a self referral or by dentist/GP? I think it might be too late for one of my teeth but I'm willing to try anything!

Yes I've had this done too. I have had some recession but it is not really noticeable unless I stare at it. I completely understand the worry over teeth though - I used to check mine several times a day and worry constantly that they would come loose. So sympathies, it's horrible and people don't really talk about it.

The treatment is very safe and effective though, so don't put it off. My pockets have reduces to 2 at the front (normal) and just a couple of 4's

I think my husband has had this done. The poor man has no end of problems with his teeth (and takes better care of them than I do mine). I think he said it was sore. He has also had a gum graft (tissue from the roof of his mouth) to stabilise wobbly teeth which was successful but so painful for a couple of weeks afterwards he said he wasn’t sure he’d have done it if he’d known.

You don’t want root planing that is archaic and just damages the teeth - what you want is root surface debridement

Thank you all for your messages so far I really, really appreciate your comments

Hi, my dentist referred me but only after he’d exhausted all options - is the treatments above. Still awaiting an appointment with them. It’s so frustrating, I’ve taken much better care of my teeth than most people do, and my teeth are fine, it’s the gums.

Changedmename1234 - thank you for replying, I'm trying to get myself armed with as much information as I can. Me too, I take such good care of my teeth and always have but unfortunately I have bad gum genetics!

RobinHumphries - thank you for replying. I wonder if you can tell me anything more about root surface debridement??
