Hi everyone!
I’m hoping you lovely ladies might be able to help me out with a query. I’m a writer and am currently writing a novel with an eight and a half year old girl as a central character. I don’t have children myself and am struggling to find some words of dialogue that sound authentic coming from a girl of that age. I need some words she would use to say something is great or good. The book is set in Manchester so any northern dialect terms that children use would also be appreciated. I probably say things like ‘that’s fab’ or ‘ace’ (that last one is the northerner in me!) but what do young school kids say these days?
Likewise, any terms for things they don’t like (a way to say ‘that’s awful’) would also be a huge help.
Thank you so much, I’d be really grateful for any advice!
Best wishes,
Claire

Another vote for “disGUSTing” and also “minging” (nieces in Liverpool are 7 and 9)

It's a minefield. I'd be a little wary of using too current language. My teenagers talk about things 'slapping' - "That tune really slaps" (Though the tune itself is not a "slapper", but a "banger" - "That slapper really bangs" is a COMPLETELY different thing. They 'vibe' a lot these days. "I can vibe to to that". In ten years time all that current yoofspeak is going to sound as horribly dated as hep to the 'Fab', 'gear', 'groovy', jive 'daddy-oh'... and yes 'ace'.

My kids are 9 and 6 and from London. They say COOL, EPIC and AWESOME.

DinosApple · 21/02/2020 15:59

My 9 & 10yo say cool, awesome and epic too. Never heard of Lit. Some classmates say sassy. Suffolk backwater here.

Definitely gross for something disgusting.

In fact I used to use and still do use cool and gross, which must mean I'm old. Grin.

Hearing my mid 60s mum use cool/gross gives me internal cringe though.
