Internal promotion, styling it out of unsuccessful

I've gone for an internal promotion, I really don't think I'll be successful but I want to start pushing myself and as it's only an acting up position I didn't think there was much to loose. I really don't think I'll be successful but will find out formally next week.

It's a small office and everyone knows everyone's business, it'll also be obvious when I get pulled in for the chat what it's about. Please can I have some tips on styling it out if I am unsuccessful?

I know the next day it'll all be forgotten about , however if I'm unsuccessful I'm cringing already at the thought of others knowing I didn't get the role.

Depends if there is someone they’ve already earmarked for it. I was on a fixed contract and went for the permanent role but they gave it to my predecessor. In that case my boss let me down early.

Thanks Lizzie, I think they have earmarked it for someone else, although haven't openly said that. I'm fine with not being successful (although would he disappointed) however I'm just worried about the 'commiserations' after and handling that.

Then treat it as experience of application/interview in a familiar environment and it’s a happy bonus if you do get it.

You need to listen to Roosevelt. I thought about this a lot when I put myself forward for promotion. Good luck and make sure you update us.

Just turn around any commiserations into a positive. Ie ‘I’m starting to think about my next steps career wise and it was good experience for me’. You’re right about pushing yourself so hold your head up high and be proud you want to progress.

Have you already had the interview?

Thecomfortador · 21/02/2020 09:09

Aah I had similar once, I'd actually withdrawn as was on leave on interview day...thrn when I came back thry said they'd moved the interview day as they wanted to interview me! So I went to the interview, up against older candidate who had been there longer...and she got the job.

I just walked in, congratulated her pleasantly, and got on with my day. But it wasn't fun I have to say and puts me off applying for internal jobs where I am
I think hold your head high, be as philosophical as you can (it's all good experience etc) and as you say tomorrow everyone will have forgotten.

Good luck!

BadCatDirtyCat · 21/02/2020 09:25

Definitely go with the "all interviews are good experience" line. Also - it's true! And you will never get anywhere career wise without risking rejection so well done for going for it.

BadCatDirtyCat · 21/02/2020 09:25

Good luck!

It's good to go for opportunities even if you aren't successful because you are showing everyone you want to progress and it's good experience.
