Any ideas why my cats suddenly got bald patches??

I’ve posted in the litter tray and not had any answers so I thought I’d see if anyone on chat could help?

My beautiful cat has within the last week suddenly lost a lot of fur on his hind legs, which is now spreading to his belly and front legs.

He’s at the vets Saturday morning (only appointment I could get this week) but just wondered if anyone has ever seen anything like this? Doesn’t seem overly sore and I’ve not caught his excessively licking the area 🤷‍♀️ It doesn’t seem sore to touch when I’ve stroked him he wasn’t bothered at all.

He’s up to date on his flea and wormers. He’s eating drinking, playing all ok his poo is fine no signs of anything.

I’ve attached a picture of it, started as a really small patch and just got bigger and bigger

Mine had this, turned out to be a flea bite allergy. I was using frontline flea treatment but it didn't work, now I get a prescription one from the vets.

One of cats has this when one of her allergies flares up, for her it’s either flea, or food allergy.

Also my cat looks just like yours!

Have you washed his bedding? Used different washing powder on your bedding? Sprayed/sprinkled anything on your carpets? It could just be a little allergic reaction to something. If he was a dog I would say give him Piriton but I dont know if they are safe for cats.

Thank you, for fleas I either use advantage or advocate from the vets.

I shall treat the house with some indorex spray tomorrow. Just in case it is fleas and I shall re flea him his 4 weeks is up but will get the advocate from the vets on Saturday.

I’ve not changed his food but maybe the ingredients have changed

Yep, allergy most likely grass pollen or flea bite allergy according to our vet. Steroid injection every 2-3 months usually sorts ours out.
My cat started with bald patches like those out of the blue around feb/march for about 6 months at a time.
She could go from having a lovely coat of fur to bald patches on her back and hind legs within a couple of days. We wouldn't even see her licking and nibbling either.

I’ve swapped to fairy and comfort pure because dh has started getting eczema on his arms and neck, that the only thing I think I’ve changed.

My cat did this when he had a thyroid problem. We did see him pulling it out though. Now that he's having treatment he's stopped, thankfully.

Agree with Tranquility
Our cat had a thyroid issue and had bald patches on her tummy and back legs. Once she began with tablets the fur grew back.
You need to visit the Vet and he needs a blood test.

One of my cats did this. They were over grooming because of stress. If there have been any major changes in your cats life it could be this.

MistyIsland · 20/02/2020 22:04

I’m taking him Saturday, to see what they say, I was just a bit worried as it’s happened so quickly.

@DazedandConcerned

Not really, we got a new puppy about 4 weeks ago but they seem to be getting on like a house on fire, no issues, one of my other cats was pts 3 weeks ago but he wasn’t overly interested in her. He doesn’t seem to be excessively grooming. He’s quite a chilled out cat really nothing seems to faze him 🤷‍♀️

Aw! He's the spitting image of my Ebony (yes, original name for a jet black cat). I had a similar problem with her about 5 years ago, although the bald patch was on her back, just in front of the base of her tail. I noticed that she was washing this particular spot with increasing frequency. Then we found she had fleas. The vet said that it was a combination of her over-grooming the same spot, and an allergic reaction to the fleas. An Advocat prescription soon sorted it out.
But,as a previous poster has said,it may be a thyroid problem. One of my mum's cats developed widespread bald patches, and it turned out to be an under active thyroid. It was confirmed by a blood test. She had to take tablets for this, and the bald patches grew back eventually.
What's your lovely boy's name btw?

One of mine has this in cold weather. She hates the cold so much and gets so stressed she gets a bald patch. She has her special blanket by the radiator to keep her as warm as possible.
