Music streaming services

I'm usually pretty technologically adept, but when it comes to music I'm stuck in the 90s, and quite content there. However I feel like I'm doing my daughter a disservice by not knowing how to help her explore music and discover what she likes. What's the best way for a preteen to access music through her phone? Spotify? Apple music? Something else? Is Amazon music any good? I do have Amazon prime if that helps. She has an iPhone but I'm an android girl so am a bit clueless there. Don't mind paying a small monthly subscription but nothing excessive until I know how much she'll use it.

I've got Amazon music which I like. If you have Prime it costs an extra £7.99 per month. I have the app on my phone, DCs both have dots in their rooms which they use for streaming and I have an echo show in the kitchen that I stream on. It's brilliant. Very rarely a song that isn't available.

Spotify. Hands down the best app Ive downloaded.
There is a free version with ads. £9.99 a month without. Virtually limitless library and algorithms will suggest new music based on your listening choices.
Have come across so much new music I like, that I would never have heard of without it.

I enjoy Amazon Prime Music too.

I love Spotify, I pay for family which is £15 per month and let's me connect up to 6 accounts. As everyone has their own account everyone can listen to something different at the same time and set up their accounts with their music.
It has great choice and I love offline listening, so i download full playlists ready for the car, even just for work but especially for long drives so I a) dont burn through mobile data b) my music doesn't stop with no signal.

Another vote for Spotify. I also use it for podcasts. There are loads of kid-friendly ones.

ScrambledEggForBrains · 21/02/2020 06:43

I use the free version of Spotify. I don’t mind the ads, it’s like radio that only plays your favourite music.

SaskiaRembrandt · 21/02/2020 07:00

I use Spotify, it's introduced to to so much new music. It's also encouraged me to listen to bands I wouldn't have considered before. I did use the free service for a while but signed up for a subscription because of the option to listen offline.

It also has podcasts, but I use another service for that.

DebbieFiderer · 21/02/2020 08:19

Thanks all. I assume both of those have all the current music that preteens will be into? Might try the free version of Spotify and see how much she uses it.

at the moment spotify are doing three months free if you sign up to the payment option
they have awesome music on there including a lot of American i cant access elsewhere

DebbieFiderer · 21/02/2020 10:18

How do you get the three month trial? I can only see an offer for one month free on their website.

Also, when I sign up, should I do it with my email address or DD's? She is 12.

Spotify is top tier, the rest don’t come close.

Not all songs/artists/albums are available on every platform for various reasons, Spotify has the widest catalogue.

ActualHornist · 21/02/2020 10:29

I’ve got Apple Music and like it a lot. They did a three month free trial which hooked us in - I pay for a family subscription which is £14.99 monthly, there’s 4 of us on it.

I can’t say whether it’s better than Spotify/Deezer/Amazon Music, but it’s easy to navigate, easy to set up playlists, and it’s available on Android too. I’m used to the interface.

You probably need to sign up from the device to activate the free trial. PS you’ll definitely find all you favourite 90s tunes on Apple Music as I’ve made several playlists Grin

mnthrowaway202020 · 21/02/2020 10:38

I started to pay for music subscriptions when Apple Music was released - 2013-ish? Eventually Spotify premium just improved to the extent that Apple Music is a chore to use. I switched in 2016 and haven’t touched Apple Music since.

I find Spotify’s interface is much easier to use, it has a wider catalogue and better playlist selection (as it has a wider user base). I love all the personalised aspects of Spotify like daily mixes, release radars, year in review etc - it’s all fine tuned to your tastes.

Apple even gave me a 3 month free trial of Apple Music recently as it had been so may years since I last subscribed, but I still continued paying for Spotify as it just isn’t an equal replacement! Apple seems to have higher quality audio though.
