Son has to have glasses

Evening everyone,
so my son had two headaches in the space of a week so went to get his eyes tested. The pre test showed he was a +4 the optician guy said +3.50... collected his glasses yesterday and they’ve made him poorly.... blurred vision with them on, bloodshot eyes, feeling sick, constantly blinking and eyes watering.... is there any chance the optician guy could of got the prescription wrong? My son never complains his eyes hurt and can read, use computer etc and says it’s fine and not funny or blurred, phoned vision express to be told stop wearing them with immediate effect ! Any advise appreciated x

how old is dc?

ime (I got glasses mid thirties, was +2) adjusting takes time.
the eyes are so used to overcompensating.
let him wear them for an hour at a time first, keeping them on longer gradually.

if it doesn't improve in a day or two go back.

Africa2go · 20/02/2020 19:57

Yes, theres a chance its wrong but the more likely explanation is adjustment. How old is he? My son was 3 when he started wearing glasses, slightly stronger prescription than your sons but he'd obviously been compensating for poor vision for 3 years and it definitely took a good 3 or 4 days if not longer for him to feel comfortable with them.

Mummybear26 · 20/02/2020 20:07

My son is 10 now last went when he was 8/9 and there was no issues then all of a sudden a +3.50 both eyes, poor lad can’t even keep them on for 10 minutes without feeling or being sick, he says he can’t see nothing in them everything is blurry and there causing problems for him, his crying and now dreads me saying to him to try them his just generally not coping. Plus they made me pay £40 For his glasses and we choose the free frames!! I don’t know weather to get a second opinion somewhere else? I’m trying to help him but at the same time feeling like a nag due to making him keep trying them on when they make him poorly. I don’t know if it’s normal or not I’m confused :( x

Take him back to the shop. My daughter got given too strong a prescription in Specsavers once, we went back, they retested her and changed the prescription. There was no issue at all. I'm surprised you had to pay though, my daughters glasses are +6 and I pay for thinning but it's optional.

FREEM · 20/02/2020 20:13

did they use drops and get 4 then adjust to 3.50?
the norm would be to reduce it by around 3 for the drops and working distance giving a prescription of around 1 which would be normal and no glasses needed.
I'd nip back

Quartz2208 · 20/02/2020 20:14

take him back

MrsT1405 · 20/02/2020 20:17

My ds were glasses from about 3 with no problem. We got some new ones and he wouldn't wear them! Turned out the prescription was miles off. Took a lot of foot stamping and being told I was wrong, to get it sorted.

FREEM · 20/02/2020 20:19

on the flip side if he really needs 3.50 it can take a while to adjust as he's used to subconsciously over focusing

Mummybear26 · 20/02/2020 20:20

The pre test machine gave a +4 and then he had his pupils dilated and he said a +3.50. I phoned them a little while ago and they said to stop them with immediate effect but then said they can work with me to give him a lower prescription and only use them for school work instead of all day use... I said I wasn’t happy at all that the whole appointment was a total nightmare and I’m stressing because there as much use as a chocolate teapot!!

At 10 could it not be that he just really does not want to wear them?

georgiams · 20/02/2020 20:25

The pre test aren't accurate just a starting point for the optom to work from. A +3.50 will take some getting used to if no better after 2 weeks go back and have a re-test.

okiedokieme · 20/02/2020 20:27

At 10 they would have been able to properly test (it's hard before they can read) so I doubt it's that far out. Eyes can deteriorate around that age. Ask for a retest, and next time go to an optician that doesn't charge (I'm guessing you went to boots, they try to up sell)

KahlanRahl · 20/02/2020 20:28

Even just a small adjustment to my glasses take me days to adjust and stop feeling dizzy. You could try to have him measured again but if he gets the samish prescription then he will just need to adjust.

MrsDoylesTeaBags · 20/02/2020 20:30

That's quite a strong first prescription. I would get it double checked and maybe see if he can get a lower prescription to start with. Also check if they're fitting correctly. I have a strong prescription too and if my glasses are too loose and slide down my nose I get a "warped" vision that causes similar problems.

Don't worry too much about his vision changing, just like other muscles in our body our eyes change a lot, particularly at that age.

DancerOnIce · 20/02/2020 20:32

Don’t make him wear them. Get his eyes retested, either with the original optician or somewhere else for a second opinion. The prescription may be correct, but it doesn’t sound like it’s right at all. It could be that it’s correct but too much of a jump for his eyes to go from no glasses to +3.50! In which case they can give him a reduced prescription while his eyes adjust

3luckystars · 20/02/2020 20:34

Get a second opinion.

Landlubber2019 · 20/02/2020 20:38

This is a similar prescription to my son who has worn glasses for years. Without glasses my son complains he can't see at all, I would def get another opinion.

strawberrylipgloss · 20/02/2020 20:42

Stop wearing them and go back to VE. They should retest and make a new pair.
+3.5 is very strong for a first pair. My son recently got his first at -1.5 and I felt bad that I'd not taken him sooner.
I paid for anti-glare coating so my sons glasses cost me money but did you need to get thinner lenses hence paying the £40?

mumwon · 20/02/2020 20:45
  • a suggestion - if you live anywhere near a University which trains opticians take him there to get them to test - it wont cost
In Cambridge Anglia Ruskin does this - the students do the test the tutors supervise so you get a thorough test (double test in a way) It is quite possible that your son doesn't like his glasses - why don't you ask what the other children said (in around about way) & ask if he felt they got in the way when he was playing football or whatever - I wonder if he was being teased? the other thing that can happen is if the lenses aren't set right -ie if he has a astigmatism or whatever.
Mummybear26 · 20/02/2020 20:49

Didn’t get them thinned just normal thick lenses apparently his prescription didn’t cover the cost of his glasses or some crap. It’s not the fact he doesn’t want to wear them because he thinks glasses are cool and wants to be like his nan n grandad Hmm they really suit him too it’s just fact he isn’t coping with them and is showing these awful side effects.

OP posts:
Mummybear26 · 20/02/2020 20:53

They said he has to have them all time apart from sport and p.e, when we picked them up he was so excited to show them off I took him to his friends house because his friend has glasses too and thought support would be good for him and he came over funny within a matter of minitues and had to remove them

OP posts:
HalfSizeMe · 20/02/2020 20:54

Did he put the glasses on first thing in the morning? I find if I try to change glasses halfway through the day I get weird effects and my eyes can't cope, but if I wear the same pair all day I'm fine

Ilovellamas · 20/02/2020 20:58

This happened to our son he got new glasses and still couldn’t see. We went to a different optician and they found out that the previous optician s had forgotten to do lenses that accounted for his astigmatism. My advice is to go to another optician, glasses shouldn’t make your child worse.

flipperdoda · 20/02/2020 21:05

They said he has to have them all time apart from sport and p.e

This sounds like really strange advice for a reasonably strong prescription. Mine is a bit stronger than his, but not hugely - and frankly sports would be utterly dangerous for me without my glasses on. I would go and get a second opinion

Mummybear26 · 20/02/2020 21:09

He had them on first thing this morning and the eyes went blood shot started watering and he was constantly blinking next thing I’d knew was he was being sick managed 7 minutes this morning but same effects :(
