Should to the hospital? I feel too stupid to!

I fell on my wrist on Saturday, ice skating with my DC's. I heard a snap and immediately thought I'd broke it because it really hurt on impact. I RICE'd it at home and googled it. Came to the conclusion it was probably just a bad sprain because it wasn't a constant ache and the pain only happened when I twisted it. So I rested it and used a firm grip support.

It hasn't improved at all and tbh it's constantly hurting now and affecting my sleep. I've also got numbness in my arm and fingers. Slight swelling but no bruising.

I feel like I can't go get it looked at now though as it's 5 days since it happened and don't A&E say to attend only in the first 24 hours? Was going to post in AIBU but can't be bothered with the righteousness Grin

If you have numbness and you delay too long you are risking permanent neurological damage. Don't wait for the GP to call back, what do you expect him to do over the phone? Go to A&E where they can x-ray it and don't be surprised if you need an operation.

CottonSock · 20/02/2020 11:24

You need an xray

LangSpartacusCleg · 20/02/2020 11:25

I would go to A&E.

And not recognizing a fracture immediately is surprisingly common. It has happened to me twice (ankle and wrist). My mum still hasn’t lived that down!

Damntheman · 20/02/2020 12:44

You can have a fracture and not have any pain unless you make a certain kind of movement. I've had that several times. Last time I broke my foot I could walk on it just fine so long as I didn't put my weight up over my toes. It was broken.

Sounds like you have broken it given the numbness and swelling OP. Go to A&E, it'll be ok. They won't judge you :) Best of luck.

FeedMeChoc · 20/02/2020 12:45

GP will refer you to A&E or provide you with an urgent X-ray request to bypass A&E. but A&E is best as you’ll get it dealt with straight away.

Mlou32 · 20/02/2020 12:52

I can't believe what I'm reading...most people go to A&E with entirely inappropriate issues and here is a rare breed who actually needs to go yet doesn't want to "waste their time"!

OP - on a serious note, go to the hospital, you aren't wasting their time, that's what they are there for, genuine accidents and emergencies.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 20/02/2020 12:58

You need a minor injuries unit, not A&E. Google minor injury units in your area

Wishforsnow · 20/02/2020 13:02

Makes sense to go to A&E as they can x-ray. If you go to the gp they will send you there anyway and it could take weeks to get a gp appointment

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 20/02/2020 13:05

Go straight to a&e op. The GP will only send you there anyway!

BusterTheBulldog · 20/02/2020 13:08

Have you got a minor injuries? I would just go there. Big fan of minor injuries service!

goingoverground · 20/02/2020 13:10

You should always go to A&E if you have numbness after an injury or the pain increases. If you are being treated for an injury, it's standard advice to return if the pain gets worse or you get numbness/pins and needles.

Just go now and get the long wait in A&E started... The GP will send you anyway.

goingoverground · 20/02/2020 13:22

Also, I would go to A&E not a minor injuries unit if you have numbness. They can get it seen by orthopedics there and then, if necessary, and can do scans if it is a soft tissue injury, minor injuries will probably only have an x-ray machine. If you go to minor injuries and need that, they will have to refer you to the hospital.

MinesaPinot · 20/02/2020 13:23

I slippped on a step and my foot swelled up, but because I could moved it and walk on it I thought I just had a really bad sprain. I went back to work and wore my dance trainers as they were the only things that gave me support. After 5 days when it was still swollen DH forced me into the car and took me to Minor Injuries. One x-ray later showed that I had a minor fracture at the base of the fifth metatarsal. Whilst I didn't need a cast or boot the nurse did say that I should have gone in sooner just to make sure as it could have been much worse.

So, OP, get yourself to Minor Injuries or A & E, particularly if you've got numbness.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 20/02/2020 14:05

@MinesaPinot my dad did something very similar. He decided it was just a bad sprain. The following day he noticed a big lump on his foot, my mum pressed on it and he nearly fainted from the pain! Yes, broken metatarsal. He did it a week before Beckham did his, but was still on crutches when Beckham was back playing football!
Op, you're doing the right thing. Even if it is just a bad sprain, you'll get given a proper bandage support for it and probably something for the pain.

Aryaneedle · 20/02/2020 14:53

Just got back.

A bone ( the one that sticks out) had moved and was in the wrong place Shock.

They have stabilised it and put it in a splint but I have to go back tomorrow to fracture clinic to see if I need further treatment. Thanks all Flowers

Well done for going, glad its getting sorted. And thanks for the update.

Booboostwo · 20/02/2020 16:11

Glad you got help. Hopefully it is sorted and they won't need to do anything else tomorrow.

worryingAbout · 20/02/2020 16:14
