Work books for home - right level or level ahead

I usually get some workbooks to work through in the easter and summer holidays with the DC. Eldest has SN and forgets everything over a break. Consequently, I've always bought the youngest something to do too. No problems at school, consistently does well in all tests. I'm ordering stuff now.

Do I get the books for the school year she is in currently as a revision and consolidation for her?

Or do I get the books for the following school year?

Teacher here - if they're getting everything right from the current year I'd go for the next year as a challenge, but if they still need some help then stick with the current year.

Depends on your child. My son was reasonably good at maths, but completely lacking in confidence. School sent home practice books in ks2 that were the level ahead to 'bring him on' and that was it. Thought he couldn't do them, confidence obliterated. Still a problem at 15.

If he'd been the sort of child who liked a challenge or didn't mind getting things wrong, it probably would have worked for him.

Assuming your youngest is where they should be, I’d get the next year’s books as by summer, he/she will have completed all of their current year’s work. I’d get the current year for your child that has SEN as consolidation.

Weve got correct year, but CPG stretch books for DS2 in maths. Dont know if they do stretch for other subjects? That might be worth looking at?

Yes, youngest is where she should be. If I get the next level, will be starting to do the same that eldest is currently doing (which won't please him, but she will at some point, over take him).

I'm also wary of me explaining in a completely different way to what they'll be taught. On the other hand, don't want her to get bored. Neither at home nor next school year!

Why not follow some different passions in the holidays? They cover the curriculum in school, so many other things to learn.

The OP answered this in the very first post. Eldest has SN and just forgets if there isn't work done over the big holidays.

Maybe try Khan academy and/or BBC bitesize and adjust as they go on.

Hmm I can see how that would be upsetting for the other DC. Maybe get something a bit different for the younger DC like a times table book (times tables are a big focus in primary education at the moment), a mental maths test book, get her to do some creative writing or a diary.
