Downtime on iPhone?

I have put downtime on my 12 yr old ds iPhone from 10pm until 7am. I thought this would prevent any usage, phone calls, using apps etc between those times.
However he has left his phone downstairs tonight and I am still up binge watching Number 9!
It has constantly buzzed with what the home screen says is " Allnighters Instagram".

Have I been naive in letting him have the phone in his room assuming downtime would prevent anything coming in? I have just sent a test text to his phone and it has buzzed although I can't get into his phone to see if I can send one back as the little bugger has changed his password!

So what in actual fact does downtime prevent the phone being used for?

You can still use the ‘phone’ app, ie calls and texts in downtime and also any specific apps that you have enabled in the settings. It’s not a blanket block

So will I have to go into each individual app he has and enable it to be covered by downtime?

And even at that all you have to do is either clock allow for - 15 mins

  • 1 hour
  • all day

Or if restricted to so many hours a day you will need to put in a code and then click allow for x amount of time.

I had a problem with downtown at one point and found I needed to go through all apps and reset the password etc - it has worked fine again since then. My 12 year old brings the phone to me when it turns off at 9.30 and I plug it in in my room.
