Have your DC had scarlet fever?

If so, what symptoms did they have?

DC have both been ill whilst with their dad and I am wondering if they have scarlet fever. It’s been doing the rounds at school.

How did it present with your dc?

Temperature, rash and generally out of sorts. The Dr was pretty quick to diagnose it once I told him it was doing the rounds at nursery.

Elbeagle · 19/02/2020 19:38

Yes. High temp, headache, very sore throat with pus on tonsils, flushed cheeks. With DD2 the rash was the last thing to arrive. DD2 didn’t get a rash at all, but scarlet fever was confirmed by swab.

Sillyshell · 19/02/2020 19:40

Both mine have had it, DD had a slight temperature and a bit of a rash on her torso so we didn't realise what it was until DS caught it and he was was really poorly. He had a high temperature and his torso and cheeks were bright red, was given penicillin and was running around after a couple of days

DDs first noticeable symptom was a rash covering her whole body. She then complained of a sore throat and had a slight temperature. Felt better in no time after getting the antibiotics. When some spots appeared on her sister a few days later, I knew what it was and she got the antibiotics very quickly, and was well (but still spotty) by evening. DD1 had 2 days off school, DD2 had one but it was then weekend, she would have needed a second day to be out of the 'infectious' time. (24hrs after ABs)

Ohyesiam · 19/02/2020 19:45

Fever abs red cheeks. It was very quick, both kids done in 24 hours. Confirmed with swab because ds was being looked at for possibly tonsil abscess.

TheNoiseHurts · 19/02/2020 19:46

Yeah three times, twice with one child (ended up diagnosed in A&E) and with that, in hindsight my eldest when he was younger.

They had a rough red rash like sand paper. But tellingly the rash was on the roof of their mouth and they had sore tonsils as well.

What was also was weird was 2-3 weeks after they recover the skin on their hands and feet peels off.

We needed 10 days of AB's to get over it, on all occasions.

Or was it 14? I remember it being a long course.

EmmaNumberThree · 19/02/2020 19:48

Both have been unwell at the same time. DS2 had loose stools, high temp, feeling unwell.
DS1 had high temp, sore throat, feeling unwell, one episode of vomiting, no appetite. Tonight when I have looked in his mouth (which he said is sore) he has a white coating on his tongue, he has the lines under his armpits and a rash on his back.

Do they need antibiotics or does it go by itself?

Temp first then the rash, feeling achey and generally irritable :(
Calpol and lots of CBeebies got us through it. Hope they are better soon.

EmmaNumberThree · 19/02/2020 19:49

Yes DS2 said he has been achy.

Elbeagle · 19/02/2020 19:51

Oh yes, rash on the roof of the mouth!
It can go on its own in a few weeks, but they will be contagious that whole time and it can get worse.
If they have antibiotics they are no longer contagious after 24 hours, and it will speed up the healing.

Fedupandpoor · 19/02/2020 19:51

DD had one cold after the other, scarlet fever then a vomiting and diarrhea bug 😔

Poor little thing was 2 weeks in bed, no appetite and lost 3kg. Very lethargic, high fever and red rash.

EmmaNumberThree · 19/02/2020 19:56

Yes he has what looks like sores or ulcers on the roof of his mouth (DS1)

OP posts:
Fairypiggy · 19/02/2020 19:56

Yes when she was 2. Got rash and sore throat with temperature. Before the rash came she kept sticking her tongue out and saying it was sore, strawberry tongue is one of the early features! Got better pretty quickly with antibiotics.

FenellaMaxwell · 19/02/2020 20:00

Yes. It was awful. He seemed like he had the worst throat/ear infection in the world, with a really high temp, and we took him to the gp twice to be told it was just a virus but he seemed so, so ill. The rash came out on day 5, at which point the doctor pumped him full of antibiotics and within a day he seemed fine.

EmmaNumberThree · 19/02/2020 20:00

Better get ourselves to the GP tomorrow then. We are supposed to be meeting family on Friday so don’t know whether it’s still ok to go or not?

OP posts:
Witchend · 19/02/2020 20:04

The rash was very distinctive-just like sandpaper.
If it hadn't been for that then I'd have not thought they were ill though. They didn't really even have much of a temperature.

Elbeagle · 19/02/2020 20:06

Mine were the opposite... rash hardly noticeable but very ill!

EmmaNumberThree · 19/02/2020 21:33

The rash seems to have faded now so no idea!

Hollylolly28 · 19/02/2020 21:36

My ds just had it started with vomiting and a temperature then woke up with a rash over body and really sore and red around genitals took to gp and diagnosed scarlet fever, he never complained of a sore throat but had bumps on his tongue

EmmaNumberThree · 19/02/2020 21:53

I will take them to the GP tomorrow. They have a walk in and wait system so I hope it's ok to take them in if they have scarlet fever?

If you are worried, could you tell the receptionist when you arrive you believe they have an infectious illness?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/02/2020 22:10

Also my DD didn't need to see a doctor, she sure the Nurse who was able to prescribe the antibiotics.

MamanSparkles · 19/02/2020 22:19

Phone in advance and say you are pretty sure its scarlet fever so they can wait in a different room. It's a noticeable illness and can kill immunocompromised or frail people - and there are a lot of those in doctors waiting rooms.

MamanSparkles · 19/02/2020 22:20

Notifiable, not noticeable! Autocorrect.

CoraPirbright · 19/02/2020 22:24

I had it as an adult! Wretchedly sore throat, fever, red rash (like goose bumps only pointier) and weird swelling of the face. My GP had to notify the authorities like we were in Victorian times or something!
