I applied for a job last week, how long before I hear? If at all?

I applied for an NHS job, closing date was last Friday. Interviews are next Tuesday. Would I have heard by now if I have been short listed.

Do they always contact with a rejection?

I’m afraid that most never get back to you if they’re not interested. It is rude but it’s mainly a recruiters market.

The public sector can be slow with communication, although if you’ve not heard by Friday then it’s a no (I was once offered a public sector interview Friday afternoon for the following Monday morning!! 🙄)

I'd expect to hear by this Friday. They won't get back to you if your application wasn't successful for interview though, usually because there's so many who apply.

NHS jobs can take for fucking ever. Not just for interview decisions (and don't forget, staff are likely to be off for the school holidays), but once you've actually been offered a job, it can still be weeks until you actually get a start date.

It took five months from application to my first bank shift, as I had to do the training, have the blood tests, get the DBS through, etc, etc.

In that time, I'd got another job. So they wasted all that time and money, only for me to do a whole 5 days.

Don't depend on the interview being next Tuesday. On the nhs systems I've used, you have to put an interview date on. It often gets changed.

Also, if you applied online, you should be able to log in to wherever you applied from and see the status of your application (even if your application wasn't shortlisted for interview).

Employers now rarely reply if you've not made the cut. Basically because they receive literally HUNDREDS of applications.

I discovered this when dd and I were job hunting a few years back. We both applied for hundreds of jobs each and got very few replies and 1 of the few I got was automated - rejected by a bot!!

Dd was lucky and found a job.

I agree if you've not heard by Friday write it off.

You will get a reply for the NHS. It’s similar to the civil service recruitment system- you reject all candidates you’re not progressing at the same time you notify the ones you are- it’s an automated system. Also, agree, don’t read too much into the interview date- they rarely stick!

Thanks everyone. I already work for NHS, just applying to a different trust. I couldn't remember how long it all took last time.
