Ungoogleable cliche I seem to have invented myself

Is this even a phrase?

‘Everybody has their own row to how’

If yes - do you know the meaning? I was googling for it, and found only ‘She has a tough row to hoe’. Which I understand, but it’s not the cliche I’m looking for.

Sorry -

‘Everybody has their own row to HOE’

Like everybody has their own cross to bear? I’ve never heard of it!

Craftycorvid · 18/02/2020 22:21

I’ve heard this one before, as in just a ‘row to hoe’ but not quite how you’ve used it.

PlatinumBrunette · 18/02/2020 22:21

‘Plough your own furrow’ is a more common version. Like yours though!

BrainBetrayingMe · 18/02/2020 22:21

I've never hear of it either, but would interpret it in a similar way to Bette Davis, the phrase that came to mind for me is "everyone has their own boat to sail".

FriedasCarLoad · 18/02/2020 22:21

I've never heard it before, but presumably it must be 'hoe' not 'how', to make sense.

Then it could be:
-everyone has their own tasks to complete
-everyone has to work and pay their dues
-everyone must find their own path in life

TendsToHappen · 18/02/2020 22:22

It’s “hoe your own row”, as in MYOB.

FriedasCarLoad · 18/02/2020 22:22

Sorry, slow typist and just saw your update!

YesILikeItToo · 18/02/2020 22:33

How about interesting - Shesgotbettedaviseyes has it closest. In my head it IS like ‘We all have our crosses to bear’. But I come from a very atheistic background!

I’ve googled that phrase, and I see immediately people mentioning the kind of ambiguity about it that I’m struggling with when I think about my own cliche of choice.

It's a line in John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy", I think.

Socalm · 18/02/2020 22:36

Googled it. Definition in first result:

idioms.thefreedictionary.com/hoe+own+row

YesILikeItToo · 18/02/2020 22:41

No that’s not the cliche I’m looking for, Socalm! I’m clutching for idea behind ‘crosses to bear’, but I think the meaning I’m thinking of is a bit more pejorative. Like - pipe down, you’re not so special, we’ve all got rows.

ladycarlotta · 18/02/2020 22:47

I've heard it said when people are in unenviable/tragic situations. 'That's a hard row to hoe'. You definitely didn't make it up!

AmelieTaylor · 18/02/2020 22:55

No. I’ve not heard it like that.

Just like ‘that’s a hard road to hoe’

A difficult path to take

HopefulFor2020 · 18/02/2020 22:59

I've heard it but only in the Kacey Musgraves song 'Biscuits'. I assumed it was an American saying from Southern farming or something
