Manchester - diverse, safe areas

Peanutbuttermouth · 18/02/2020 20:56

I know Manchester has been done before on here but I'm looking for a diverse area to bring my kids up in. We live in a very homogeneous town at the moment and will be moving to Manchester in the next year. Can I please have opinions on the nicest, safest, most affordable areas? Need a 3 bed house on budget of 220k max.

Prices are high around Manchester. have you looked at the Saddleworth side of Oldham? Or around Stockport maybe?

Cabaceo · 18/02/2020 21:08

My 'Manchester', do you mean the 'City of Manchester' or 'Greater Manchester' ? The 'City of Manchester' itself is quite an odd shape, c12 miles long, 2/3 miles wide. It is surrounded by other Metroplitan boroughs, Bury, Stockport, Trafford, Salford (City of) etc..
Generally there's a divide between area north of the city centre - where ceteris paribus, you will get more bricks for your bucks, and south of the city centre.

Bury is a good are, Great market and transport links

Peanutbuttermouth · 18/02/2020 21:11

Don't know Oldham at all, will look into it. Was hoping for more central areas eg Hulme/Moss Side but not sure what they're like to live in. Happy to buy ex council house (probably all I can afford!)

Isn't Bury (nice town), a good example the the type of 'homogeneous town, she's seeking to leave ?

CostaLotta · 18/02/2020 21:14

220k will get you a decent house if you go north manchester. Prestwich, Whitefield, Bury, parts of Salford.

kittykatkitty · 18/02/2020 21:16

@Cabaceo it's diverse, has good community ,

Peanutbuttermouth · 18/02/2020 21:23

I don't know north Manchester at all, I'll have to do a reccy at some point. South and central I'm more familiar with. Had a quick look on rightmove and Hulme seems out of budget. What's it like in Moss Side and surrounding areas at the moment?

How about Levenshulme?

MarchDaffs · 18/02/2020 22:02

You might like Burnage OP. There are some available three beds for your price, decent transport links and quite diverse.

SammySmyth · 18/02/2020 22:04

Excellent, I fancied a bit of virtue signalling before turning in the for the night. Thanks.

Soontobe60 · 18/02/2020 22:04

Hulme / Moss Side both very diverse but also quite dodgy in places. Very studenty. If you want walking distance to city centre you'll pay a lot!
Have a look along the Met line towards Bury. Lots of decent areas where you'll get a good house for £220k. Are your children in high school?

Peanutbuttermouth · 18/02/2020 22:07

Children in primary school at the moment, eldest will be in y6 when we move so will need to be applying for high school.
What are you on about @Sammysmyth?

OP posts:
CheshireAxe · 18/02/2020 22:07

I'd avoid Moss Side. Maybe Levenshulme, Longsight or Burnage.

Peanutbuttermouth · 18/02/2020 22:09

Will look into those last 3 suggestions thank you @cheshireaxe!

MarchDaffs · 18/02/2020 22:09

Stretford, if you don't mind being outside the City of Manchester. Its actually pretty close to town.

gettingfedupagain · 19/02/2020 08:08

@cheshireaxe has decided that you are white family who want to prove that you're not racist by moving to a more diverse area, when it could be that you are an "ethnically diverse" family looking to find an area that reflects your family make up better.

Anchovies12 · 19/02/2020 08:12

I'd say Levenshulme or burnage would definitely be worth considering. Personally wouldn't choose longsight.

Peanutbuttermouth · 19/02/2020 08:28

Oh I see @gettingfedupagain 🤣 presume you meant @sammysmyth's comment. Yes diverse family looking to find area that reflects us. Have spent a long time being the only non-white people in the village! Nothing wrong with that of course but before my eldest gets to high school I'd like to change things up a bit.

OP posts:
StormDenise · 19/02/2020 08:39

I'd go for levenshulme.

The Times seem to think so too!

gettingfedupagain · 19/02/2020 09:03

Sorry @cheshireaxe BlushI miss tagged you

Cabaceo · 19/02/2020 10:09

Stretford was mentioned. You could be less than a mile away from Manchester Town Hall, but be outside the City boundary, ie not in Manchester, but in Stretford (Borough of Trafford).

Peanutbuttermouth · 19/02/2020 12:01

I don't mind being technically outside of the city of Manchester. Is Stretford diverse? Which are the nicest streets? I don't know it at all.

OP posts:
MarchDaffs · 19/02/2020 12:06

Yeah quite multiethnic. The Gorse Hill end would historically be rougher. You tend to get less for your money in Trafford generally because of the schooling system there, they have grammars.

Deathraystare · 19/02/2020 12:59

Isn't Cold feet set in Manchester? It looks interesting but I do not know whereabouts it is.
