Books to read with 4 year old

I have been reading some Roald Dahl to my 4 year old before bed and he's really enjoyed them (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Fantastic Mr Fox were his favourite).

Can anyone suggest other chapter type books I can read to him? Preferably that come in illustrated editions?

We do lots of shorter picture books too but he seems to enjoy winding down with the longer stories.

Thanks :)

The Minalima illustrated editions with interactive bits from Harper Collins are great. They have the Secret Garden, Alice in Wonderland, Hans Christen Anderson's fairy tales etc and there are bits to play with/look at.

I'm reading the Secret Garden to dc1 who just turned 5 at the moment and he seems to love it.

The Wizard of Oz books? My mum read them to me when I was fairly young and they are on my list to read to the dc soon.

I started on the first two Harry books at that age. We also took DD to the library to browse- she has gravitated to a (naff) series about magical animals that she absolutely loves. Also liked animals of farthing wood. To my immense disappoinment she didn't get on with wind in the willows or Winnie the pooh- I think the language was a bit too formal. I will persist Grin

The Wombles.

Don't, whatever you do, get him on to The Famous Five. DH bought the set for DS and they're VERY samey.
