Hiding Pregnancy until 12 weeks

Hiya! Just found out I'm pregnant, due towards the end of October. It's early days and my first pregnancy so feeling a bit dubious about telling lots of people. We are staying with some friends in a few weeks, for the weekend, one of which is quite a big drinker and we often all go to the pub or do cocktail making at home. Anyway, at the end of last year I was on and off antibiotics a lot with dental issues and so wasn't drinking when I saw them but because of this, I feel like I've used my antibiotic excuse for not drinking. I really don't want to have to feel like I have no choice but to tell them but, this friend is a bit pushy and asks a lot of questions...
Has anyone got any good excuses I could use for not drinking?
Thank you all Smile

On an excessive diet/health kick/kidney cleanse

Tell them you got smashed the weekend before? Feign a headache on the weekend ?

Or that you've just had food poisoning a few days before and your tummy is
Still delicate, really going into graphic detail in the vomiting ... and other symptoms. That sure stops questions

Honestly I just told people. I couldnt be bothered with all the effort that goes into making up stories as to why you cant do things etc

The food poisoning one sounds a good about actually, thank you! Always fancied myself as a bit of an actress Wink

I don't know why I'm so worried about telling people really. I think part of it is wanting to tell my parents fave to face but not seeing them again until mid April as they live far away... Hmm

I'd just say your tooth has flared up again! After a case of D&V you shouldn't have contact with others for at least 48hrs once its cleared, so dont think thats a good excuse. Unless you want them bleaching their toilet each time you visit it!!!

Elouera · 18/02/2020 19:47

I never told anyone either and so glad we didnt. Its a personal choice, but we found it much easier to grieve on our own when things didnt go well in either pregnancy. I didnt have to constantly explain what happened. Hopefully you have more luck though in getting to full term x

Yeh antibiotics just makes everyone look at you suspiciously. Just don’t make a big deal of it I.e. say nothing! If anyone says anything say you’re just having the one and pretend you’ve already had it. Or be the designated driver.

Mumtobee20 · 18/02/2020 19:48

Haha I think you might be right there, I hadn't thought of that at all!!
Maybe just stick to what I know...thing I worry about is someone noticing I've not taken any tablets, maybe I'll leave my bag in another room and go to it to 'take them'...

Thank you, I wish i had the driver excuse but I don't drive and we will be with them from Friday evening until Sunday morning so potentially 2 nights I need to get away with... Confused

Get your OH to buy your drinks at the pub - something that looks alcoholic.

If doing rounds get him to order a non alcoholic drink every other time and you order booze. Discretely swap.

Trickier at home, nurse an alcoholic drink in your hand and gradually dispose of it?

Moan about having period pains and say you've taken cocodamol.

But I'd try to avoid saying you're off the booze if your friend is the nosy sort.

If you OH would play ball they could say they can't drink that weekend for whatever reason and again swap. Obviously order drinks that look similar.

With my first, I was recently married but I threw my lovely colleague off the scent by taking my handbag to the loo with me for a week. When I told her she was so surprised, and said 'but you took your bag?'. It was a beautiful moment in our friendship Grin.

Don't tell anyone you wouldn't want to tell about a miscarriage. That's the rule I stick to. Difficult though.

Kez200 · 18/02/2020 19:52

I did wait but I wasnt ill. That would have made it much much harder. Impossible even given my age and having been married for 18 months.

Mind you, I had lived for years with my mother moaning that "in her day, under 3 months was just a late period" so I just couldn't be bothered with all the extra difficulties I would have if there was any pre 12 week problems. It just seemed easier!

I cant remember the first scan dates (my youngest is 22) but thats when I told everyone. It was quite nice having a date to tell people.

Mumtobee20 · 18/02/2020 19:54

Haha!
Thanks for the tips, some good ones there! I didn't expect people to be so helpful and so quick to help ☺️

Oh I hadn't even considered the symptoms I might be having a few weeks from now! I'm already suffering with nausea and tiredness..oh and burps 😂 thanks!!

Normally I would say never ever antibiotics, but you've laid the groundwork, although inadvertently.
Could you try a couple of weeks before with 'oh, I don't think we can come, the has flared up again and I'm back on 3 week course'. Insert a bit of moaning about how terrible it is and you really want to come but you don't want to ruin the weekend. She'll probably say come anyway and youll have your excuse for being sober.

Mumtobee20 · 18/02/2020 20:05

Thank you! I suppose thinking about it you're quite right, I've already laid the groundwork so may well get away with it 😉
