Has anyone changed career from vocational creative to more traditional career?

There’s lots about people doing the reverse, which is the usual way round. Has anyone done the opposite? Eg gone from the arts or nursing to the City/law/tech?

I am looking to do this so would be interested in any responses you get!

I work in the creative industry and am now looking to move into a more corporate role. You hardly ever hear of people doing this so would love to know if anyone has.

What move are you thinking of making @YerAWizardArry?

PartTimeEverything · 18/02/2020 19:25

I know a lot of artists who have become teachers, but that’s perhaps not as corporate as you’re looking for?

Also a lot of artists who have become psychologists

I haven't heard of anyone doing it, but those doors are always open if you have even quite basic qualifications. Apprenticeships might be a good place to start.

However, I wouldn't underestimate quite how boring some of those fields are.

Yes it maybe a case of the grass isn’t always greener Maybe.

@SorryImNotCreative I’m not really sure, I don’t even know what’s possible tbh. Maybe it’s just the field I’m in at the moment but I would like something maybe more analytical. What are you thinking about?

One of my colleagues has. He worked in events planning and now works for a bank. I interviewed someone last week who worked as a chef for several years and then made the move to banking. So perfectly possible.

YerAWizardArry · 18/02/2020 22:25

That’s really interesting, thanks karma.

Not really the arts, but I worked in marketing for years, then retrained as a doctor. It was hard work, but I love my new profession and have zero regrets.

SorryImNotCreative · 19/02/2020 07:15

Don’t want to be too outing, but I work in a very “creative” role and am looking to now do what is essentially a similar role, but in a much more corporate environment.

I find my current job so boring, and it would be so much more challenging to do it in a more corporate setting. Money would be better too. It’s a big leap though!

YerAWizardArry · 19/02/2020 09:47

I’m slightly similar in that I’m actually quite bored and I think I may as well as be in a more corporate job and yes the money would be better too!

I know several musicians who retrained to become doctors. Also know a couple who now work in the City (banking I believe although I wasn't that interested). It's certainly possible if you want to OP!

YerAWizardArry · 19/02/2020 13:45

Thanks Damn that’s interesting, I do know a few doctors who play or used to play music at a high level.

I imagine the discipline and high dexterity likely come in handy!

Milicentbystander72 · 19/02/2020 14:08

Interesting.

Both me and dh are in very creative fields (think film and art etc). We've done these roles for nearly 30 years and are both now unfulfilled and bored.

I'm
Unsure what dh wants really. I took on a Secondary school Governor role last year in an attempt to challenge myself and to try and use my brain in a totally different way. It's been hard and a bit scary but I'm enjoying it. It's obviously an unpaid role though.

I'd love to try a career change but I'm nearly 50. I have no idea where to start.

YerAWizardArry · 19/02/2020 16:10

Yes I think I will have to start with something unpaid too Milicent.

Posted too soon. Have you any idea of what you’d like to do?

Milicentbystander72 · 19/02/2020 16:19

I've thought about Teaching but not sure....

I'd like to work with teens in some way. I've thought about training to be a counsellor, but again unsure and lots of studying needed to be BACP trained with an accredited course.

I'd love to do Art Conversation but again, lots more studying with very little jobs available.

I think I need to do one of those aptitude career tests they give teenagers at school Wink

Batqueen · 19/02/2020 16:21

I worked in theatre and now work in HR in a financial services company

YerAWizardArry · 19/02/2020 18:44

How have you found the shift Batqueen?

OP posts:
Dearover · 19/02/2020 18:54

Someone I know has moved from textile design to an aerial performance coach to trainee accountant.

Batqueen · 19/02/2020 19:18

When I first moved it was obviously a more junior role but I could justify how the experience I had was useful and I have a good academic background which all helped. I found in that role I ended up taking a lot more arty hobbies because I wasn’t creatively stimulated. I’m a couple roles on since then and as I’ve now done my hr quals and moved into a more senior and specialist role, part of my ‘personal brand’ (sorry I know it’s a hated term) is being creative and innovative. I find I don’t need so much arty hobbies now because my work channels that part of me.

I like also that I can afford to go to the theatre way more than when I worked in it.

YerAWizardArry · 19/02/2020 19:53

Thanks for the details Bat really helpful.

Dearover please come back and explain what an aerial performance coach is!

She teaches people to do gymnastics in hoops hung from a high ceiling, just like in The Greatest Showman et al.

YerAWizardArry · 20/02/2020 10:21

Wow! That’s pretty amazing and quite a career change there!
