Going to see sister at uni in Fallowfield. Am prepared to be proven wrong about the area but have not had agood experience of it so far. The student on the other hand thinks it’s the best place on earth😂. Is there a mutual place we can spend 6 hours with a lively nearly 8 year old boy?

Museum of science and industry (MOSI) is excellent for small boys.

Meltedicicle · 18/02/2020 16:03

My friend has 2 very lively boys. She took them to the football museum and said it was good.

x2boys · 18/02/2020 16:04

The science museum is good, I agree, and there are lots of places to eat walkable nearby. Haven't been to the football one.

MOSI
Manchester Museum (dinosaurs)
Football museum
Lowry gallery / shopping
Imperial War Museum
BBC studios tour

FairyBatman · 18/02/2020 16:11

Go and see Dippy the diplodocus on tour. It’s Rochdale so a tram or train ride.

SurpriseSparDay · 18/02/2020 16:12

Well, Fallowfield is apparently not lovely, but Manchester as a whole is fairly magnificent.

IME eight year old boys (and girls) love the Museum of Science and Industry in Castlefield (city centre) - and Imperial War Museum North (Salford Quays). The brief tram journey to Salford Quays is also quite fun for children who don’t live with trams.

Both places have their own cafes - but the city is replete with entertaining places to eat. Possibly the loveliest is the glass walled cafe at the Whitworth Gallery - which also has a park around it.

You should also check what will be on at the Lowry / Royal Exchange or any other theatre. Or at the Bridgewater Hall /RNCM if you’re music fans.

I agree with the other posts. There is also the Manchester museum that often has events for children that coincide with the school holidays. Or HOME cinema has family friendly showings and the food in the restaurant is delicious. There’s a large space outside for post lunch running around.

TheDoctorDances · 18/02/2020 16:27

Sealife Centre and Legoland in the Trafford Centre.

SurpriseSparDay · 18/02/2020 16:28

HOME would be very cosy on a day like today. And yes, their pizzas and chips are scrumptious.

EachandEveryone · 18/02/2020 16:56

Anywhere near Fallowfield they are parking up there as they have to do a big shop for the student!

I think 6 hours in Fallowfield would be optimistic with an 8 year old. Platt fields park is close. I e not been there for years though. Whitworth really isn’t far. Fusion restaurant does delicious food and is opposite Sainsbury’s, if that’s where the food shopping will take place and if they have taste buds that enjoy south East Asian food Wink.

Limbolady · 18/02/2020 17:04

Manchester centre is only a short ride on the bus though and my 7 year old would love the novelty of that!

SurpriseSparDay · 18/02/2020 17:07

OP Manchester is small and easy to get around on foot or public transport - even for people with mobility difficulties. You need not be dependent on where you’ve parked the car.

ScouseQueen · 18/02/2020 17:07

Just go into the city centre by bus / tram and meet up back in Fallowfield later. That's going to make for the most enjoyable day for the 7 yo.

ShinyGiratina · 18/02/2020 17:44

The museum of science and industry is good for a few hours. There are free bus routes around the city centre and areas like The Trafford Centre/ Lego Discovery/ Sea Life are easily accessible by bus or car.

EachandEveryone · 22/02/2020 15:44

They went to the Trafford Centre 😀😀😀

Had a lovely time as theyd never been anywhere
Like it before.

SurpriseSparDay · 22/02/2020 16:03

Hmph. The Trafford Centre isn’t Manchester.

But glad they had a good time.

EachandEveryone · 22/02/2020 16:06

What a strange thread.

ifigoup · 22/02/2020 16:46

Try going south rather than north from Fallowfield: there are great libraries in Withington and East Didsbury, and just a little bit on from there is Fletcher Moss gardens which is a huge park with a mix of botanical gardens, fields with grazing cows, etc.

Or much nearer to Fallowfield is Platt Fields Park which is massive and has a pond, playgrounds, skate park, and loads more, plus a small museum within the park.
