Mole on baby’s leg - feeling a bit worried!

Honeybee85 · 18/02/2020 12:51

DS was born with a mole on his left upper leg.
As he is growing, the mole is growing as well.
We had the pediatrician take a look at it last month and he said there wasn’t much to worry about in his opinion. Just keep an eye on it, particulary if it grows fast. We measured the mole about 6 weeks ago (first photo) and again today (second photo) and it seems it has grown by about 1 to 1,5 mm.

We are seeing pediatrician again on sathurday for DS’s jabs and we will make another appointment with a dermatologist as I want to be absolutely sure there is nothing wrong. In the meantime I feel worried because I’m not sure if this growth is too fast (DS is approaching 8 months now and his whole body is growing very fast) and I read online that moles more then 7 mm (this one is 7 mm now!) are considered risky and we’re talking about 7 mm moles on adults Sad.

I’m feeling worried now, can anybody with experience/ expertise weigh in on this matter?
Would be much appreciated

My daughter was born with a mole on her right knee, but I can't say that I've ever been worried about it or noticed it growing unduly. It's about half the size of your son's mole though and my daughter is three now. I think the appointment with a dermatologist is a good idea, just to get some peace of mind :)

It's not changing shape so it does just look like it's growing as he grows, but best to get it checked out of course. I got one of my daughters looked at last week because it had gone crusty and the doctor said it would be extremely unusual to be anything sinister in that age group.

DD has a few moles and when one on the back of her neck started itching I got really worried. Anyway, our GP who specialises in moles took a look and gave it the all clear. Apparently it's very rare for dodgy moles in children. Of course, not a reason to avoid getting it looked at, but just to put your mind at rest a little in the meantime.

DD has also had new moles appear as she's grown and certainly now has more as a tween than she did as a baby.

My eldest DD is 27 now and was born with a mole on her knee. At the time it was approximately the size of my smallest finger nail. It’s grown maybe half as much again, she gets it checked out regularly but it’s never been an issue.

See the dermatologist for peace of mind but it's highly unlikely to be anything to be concerned about. For what it's worth I don't actually think looking at your photos it has grown - the measurement on the first photo looks to be out. You would need to use the same device you measured with in the second photo to be sure.

I presume your not in the uk , you are doing the right thing in getting an appointment with a dermatologist to get it checked, I’m sure it’s probably nothing to worry about

Thanks lovely MNers so far for your replies!

I tend to worry too much about health related issues and the fact that most of you wouldn’t worry too much about it but check for peace of mind, has made me feel a bit better Blush

Looks like my birthmark. Grew with me but never changed shape or bled or was sore

Thetellyisjelly · 18/02/2020 14:12

I also think don’t worry. My little one (well he’s big now) has one similar. It was tiny at birth and really grew with him. But I took him to the doctors a few times , and all was fine. Every now and again at gp appointments for other issues I’d have the gp take a little peek and report any changes etc . But it was totally ok .

Thetellyisjelly · 18/02/2020 14:13

Also ours was bigger than 7mm

Honeybee85 · 19/02/2020 12:30

Thanks @angel0071987 and @Thetellyisjelly.
Good to hear some reassuring stories.

DH called the hospital today and we’ll go there March 7. Hopefully the dermatologist agrees that there’s nothing wrong.

An update 😊

Went to the hospital, dermatologist took a good look at it. He saw nothing that is concerning so far.
He also said melanomas in babies are very rare.
If the mole starts to grow very fast we should come back. For now it’s fine if the pediatrician checks it and we should come back to him if pediatrician says it’s neccesairy!

My DD developed a mole on her ankle when she was one. I was really worried because it was a hot summer. No GP has ever been concerned. One of them called it a birth mark due to it appearing when she was a baby. It grows with her but they confirmed it would and just to keep an eye on it.
