Best exercise class / activity for quick results?

clevername · 17/02/2020 18:10

I'm not looking for a quick fix as such (I mean, obviously I am...) I'm just stuck in the rut of caring that I'm a bit more wobbly and round in some places than I'd like to be, but somehow not caring enough to actually do anything about it. So I'm thinking if I started to see results fairly quickly then it might help my motivation.

For context, I'm 9st but short and slight framed. I reckon if I lost about a stone and, most importantly, toned up a bit I'd be sorted.

Does anyone have any recommendations for exercise classes or activities that show results fairly quickly so I can get myself motivated?

Body pump classes

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 17/02/2020 18:15

Powerwave!

clevername · 17/02/2020 18:17

Ooh, not heard of these. Is Body Pump like Body Attack?

I have started the 10 min muffin top workouts on YouTube - can’t remember the name of the channel but quick and demanding. Can always fit in 10 mins!

clevername · 17/02/2020 18:25

I keep telling myself I could do YouTube ones but I'm not managing to make myself so it... I'm thinking actually leaving the house for a class might be motivating. It used to work for me but I've just lost that last bit of giving a shit that I need.

I am in the same sort of boat but a stone heavier than you, did a treadmill run for the first time this morning. I spent 10mins in the car building the will to go into the gym.

Never ran any length in my life and only did 20 mins but looking back I managed quite well. No stitch or ill effects for a novice run.
I am hoping that I can keep it up as I have had a few false starts at home but I really want to shift some weight hence going to a gym. Good luck op.

Atalune · 17/02/2020 18:29

Kettle bell class with a weight that you increase as much as you can manage!

Fat burn HIIT on a cross trainer or treadmill. Do a warm up for 6 mins. Then go for 1min as hard and fast as you can. Then one minute walking/active rest. Do 10mins. Then each day increase by 1 minute.

Racheyg · 17/02/2020 18:42

Cross fit or any cardio/weight circuit class.

NemophilistRebel · 17/02/2020 18:43

The fastest I ever lost weight was when playing squash

Sirzy · 17/02/2020 18:46

Are you in a position to get a few sessions with a personal trainer? I have just started weekly sessions and it helps you push yourself much harder than you do alone and teaches you a wide range of exercises which are right for you

Lyricallie · 17/02/2020 18:46

Blogilates on YouTube she has some good "6 minutes to..." Series. But one in the gym I do that's short and horrible is metafit. But I'm always pleased after I've done it.

clevername · 17/02/2020 18:48

Good luck, too, @FlorencesHunger... Sounds like you're a few steps ahead of me as YOU'VE ACTUALLY GONE TO THE GYM! Well done.

Has anyone done RPM cycling classes? They've got loads of them at my local leisure centre and they're really cheap...

Definitely running.

Burns loads of calories, gets your heart rate pumping straight away and in the top burning zones.

My body had changed so much from just running

BertieDrapper · 17/02/2020 19:05

Try the Kayla itsines Sweat app.... if you stick to it you should see results after 6 weeks.

DownWhichOfLate · 17/02/2020 19:15

Running. Weights. Sort your diet out.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/02/2020 19:17

I got into a Jillian Michaels habit a while back which was pretty effective and an efficient method - less than half an hour each weekday, no travel time, minimal kit.

clevername · 17/02/2020 22:16

Thanks for the tips. I'll try and make myself give some of them a go Smile

Lyric what's metafit - a class or app?

FizzyPink · 17/02/2020 22:31

I agree with body pump but ultimately it’s what you eat. You can run on a treadmill for as long as you want but unless you eat right you won’t get results.
I highly recommend weight training plus a low carb high fat diet for fairly fast results

It's a combination IME. I'm short and now postmenopause and have a sedentary job so if I don't exercise my TDEE is pathetically little and it's really hard to get any sort of calorie deficit. If I can be moderately active every day it makes a significant difference.

heymammi · 17/02/2020 23:28

Rpm is good, I do most cycle/spin classes
And my legs/core and bum have never looked better!

clevername · 18/02/2020 16:38

Thank you all. Yes, I know what I eat is massively important. I actually eat fairly healthily... I'm vegetarian and eat loads of wholesome foods. I have developed a serious liking for chocolate and biscuits since DC2 but I'm not crazy with it. Having said that, I know that if I can curb my sugar craving AS WELL as doing some exercise I'll be well on my way. I'm a size 10-12 so it really is a question of toning up and trimming down a bit.

Think I'll give RPM a go. And they do Body Pump at my local centre so will give that a try too. And I defo want to try running but feel like I want to get my fitness up first so I don't look like a total twat...

@Celeriacacaca Metafit is a brand of HIIT. I used to do it pre DC2. It's really good (I loved the 30 mins classes). Unfortunately can't find anywhere around here that does it when I can make it.

I actually disagree with body pump as it's quite a low calorie burn if you are looking to drop weight. Yes it will tone you - which do you want more? The Loss of the tone?

If you really want the loss I'd say running, spin classes or body weight cardio (burphees, squat jumps, sprints, push ups etc). If you are pretty sedentry most of the day you will need to shift calories as efficiently as possible. HIIT cardio would also give you an afterburn effect.

If the tone part is equally important then weight based circuit training would be good.

But as someone did say - loosing weight is 80% about your diet and 20% about exercise so also try to increase your general daily activity as well.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 18/02/2020 16:53

Pilates improves your core strength, yoga is good for flexibility. I do a class for both of those, plus three Zumba classes, because I love dance, cardio and body conditioning, barre training and a toning and flex class.

They definitely tone up wobbly bits and improve flexibility.

PrawnSacrifice · 18/02/2020 20:51

Any kind of HIIT you find interesting.
