Bosch dishwasher broken, any recommendations for replacement?

Our Bosch dishwasher has developed a heating element fault for the 2nd time, we've had it 2.5 years, family of three DD is 2 so don't feel excessive use, not put on every day.

We have option of repairing it, £100 + parts
Or considering replacing altogether

I'm feeling like I've lost confidence in the machine, currently expecting DC #2 and the first time it broke DD was very little, I was suffering PND and DH has horrendous eczema which means his hand crack and bleed if he washes dishes (genuine! Not an excuse on his partGrin)

I don't want to pay what could be nearly £200 for it break again in 18 months

Any recommendations for a mid cost dishwasher? Has anyone else has repeated issues with Bosch?

John Lewis have offered £50 off the repair or replacement so looking at theirs mostly

Can't recommend anything, but I'm surprised at the lack of durability.

We've got the cheapest Bosch I could find at the time which was about £250 and it's been faultless for about 5 years. Our previous Hotpoint dishwasher lasted about 13 years.

Not long after we got the Bosch, I saw an advert for another Bosch dishwasher that claimed to properly dry the plastic tubs that normally stay wet and I liked the idea of that. But you won't want that if you're off Bosch now.

Yes - when our Bosch dishwasher broke down for the second time out of guarantee a couple of years ago we were going to replace it with the same/similar model (a basic one) but it was out of stock at John Lewis - I phoned them to ask when it would be back in stock and the John Lewis assistant I spoke to suggested we consider a Beko instead as they were reliable, eco friendly and cheaper. Rather surprised by this advice - but assuming that John Lewis have to deal with returns for brands which turn out to be poor quality - we did buy a Beko, for about £190, and it has been excellent - reliable, washes well etc. It’s a slimline one and we only use it once a day so I guess it doesn’t get particularly heavy use, but we have been perfectly happy with it and were very pleased with the advice to spend less!! Beko may be owned by a bigger company so the same parts as a more expensive brand? When shopping around try asking which brand gets returned/repaired most? We probably wouldn’t buy another Bosch from our own experience with the brand though may also have just been unlucky.

@BarbaraofSeville that's what I said to them about lack of durability, we bought it as I thought it was a good quality brand

I have seen online that this could be a common error with that model but when I asked them (Bosch) about any known faults they just said it was up to us to prove it to the seller (John Lewis) if I wanted to go down that route

This is a great problem with consumer rights. How on earth would the person in the street go about proving to a retailer any common faults with a product when the manufacturer is so evasive?

If you were minded to, you'd have a strong case for a free repair or a replacement product from either John Lewis or if they are not forthcoming and you paid by credit card, your credit card provider (jointly liable with the retailer under section 75) as this clearly fails Martin Lewis's (no relation!) SAD FART test as your consumer rights are that this product is of satsifactory quality and lasts a reasonable length of time, the test being 'how long would a reasonable person expect a product to last', which is said to be about 6 years minimum, whatever the terms of any guarantee are.

However it would involve lots of persistent letter writing to get anywhere, which is tedious, given that you'll probably replace your broken dishwasher anyway before you get anywhere. If you wanted to have a go, full info here:

This also looks useful and again involves Bosch and John Lewis.

Methinks they might both be trading on no longer relevant reputations for quality.

Our Zanussi dishwasher, installed by the Es on the floor to developer, failed. We were restricted by needing an integrated version, so there was less choice, but we saw a Beko one in Currys that was very similar to a Bosch costing way more.

We bought it online in the end. It’s really quiet, in fact a red light shines on the floor when it’s on, because you can’t usually tell. It has a range of programmes and a cutlery tray, as well as a cutlery box. I prefer the tray.

We bought a new Beko a couple of months ago - I think it's their top of the range one. Still under £400 though. Words cannot describe how much I love that machine.

MotherAughra · 19/02/2020 20:11

Thanks all, we've ordered a Beko in the end, hopefully last a bit longer!

We replace our hopeless Miele dishwasher with a Beko - £150. I love it!

Goldwispa · 19/02/2020 22:51

Hi. My Bosch broke after 3 years. I've got a beko and have had no problems

ImSOok · 19/02/2020 22:52

Cant help, but don’t replace with Siemens. Both under same company umbrella, and mine is hanging on by a thread, as is my washing machine!

BarbaraofSeville · 20/02/2020 06:15

This is interesting, I've always avoided Beko, as I thought that they were a cheap, slightly crappy brand, possibly the own label of somewhere like curry's, but it seems I was wrong.

Shows that we have no idea really, we have a perception about certain brands, which are good quality, but it's not based on anything objective. Must do some research as I expect to have to replace our fridge freezer in the short term as our current one is 22 years old so I am fully aware that it's on borrowed time.

Last few appliances have been AEG (ovens and washing machine) and while they function well, good features, feel well made and well designed etc, they're too new to assess durability.

I was looking at AEG FFs, but even the cheapest one was more than I wanted to pay and I've just noticed it's got even more expensive so might have to think again and actually go and have a look because I've looked at fridge freezers a few times over the years in preparation for the inevitable, as we're obviously likely to have to move fast when the day comes and they all seem much of a muchness even when the price varies by hundreds of pounds.
