When to worry about child’s temperature?!

My 10year old hasn’t been right today, sort of normal this morning and we went to a trampoline park and had some lunch etc but I started to notice he was a bit off and quiet, by 6pm he’s hugging himself and saying he’s really cold and just seemingly generally unwell, says his head hurts and his throat, put vapour stuff in his bath and got him to drink a bit more, Then I found him asleep, fallen asleep with earphones on watching YouTube which is absolutely in heard of, just been in to check on him and he’s really hot to the touch, temperate is 40c - I don’t know wether I’m being ridiculous but it’s made me realise he’s never really ill so it’s all a bit surprising and I don’t want to ignore it and regret it....any advice?!

Give him some medicine, calpol or nurofen. That usually helps bring temps down. Obviously keep an eye on him but get him to keep drinking too, always good to keep the fluids topped up incase of dehydration. Sounds like a virus but with his throat hurting could also be tonsillitis. Try having a look at his throat and if he’s got spots on his tongue then book a drs appo8ntment tomorrow. Tonsillitis is horrible. I’ve had it twice and my son had it a few years ago. Hope he’s better soon.

Definitely don't ignore it, if it was me I'd wake him up enough to get him to have some paracetamol. That's a high temp. It could potentially be tonsillitis or even flu. It's good you got him to drink some more and the sleep is what he needs, still if it was me I'd be delivering paracetamol and keeping a close eye.

Basically any time a kid says they feel really cold, watch out, it's probably a fever.

If they are feeling as rubbish as your ds, I would give them paracetamol or ibuprofen to bring the temperature down.

Hope he feels better soon.

That’s a high temp. Is he wrapped up in blankets ? I would wake him and give him Calpol / nurofen and check him again in half an hour. Lots going around at the moment unfortunately

Overseasmom100 · 16/02/2020 23:21

That's very high. Def needs calpol or neurofen ... wake him to administer, give a drink then comfort him back to sleep...def check temp when he wakes...but let him sleep

ilovetea14 · 16/02/2020 23:59

That's very high keep and eye on temperature. I find nurofen good and I keep windows open and wet a cloth with luke warm water put it on head and back of neck. Put light sheet on him if he feels he needs a blanket. It's important he drinks or sometimes I give my kids ice pops as well

Sorry ladies thanks for replies. I didn’t mention that he’d already had max dosage of calpol etc so it didn’t bring the temp down. He’s just woken up and is now being sick, temp degree or 3 higher than last night!! Will call docs soon as they open!

Ibuprofen is better for reducing temperatures than paracetamol. WAY better. Be concerned when Ibuprofen doesn't bring it down - you can alternate Ibuprofen and paracetamol for best effect.

Wishing you all the best for the doctors, and hope he feels better soon!

@nameymcnamechangeagain
How are things with your little one OP?

sassypants72 · 17/02/2020 13:16

If his temperature is not coming down with medication I would call 111 and see what they say. My daughter has been 42 before, but temp has come down with 2 hourly staggered medication of calpol and nurofen.

I have been previously told by doctors that the only time to get worried is if medication isn't bringing the temperature down.

I've also been previously advised by doctors to put her in a cool bath (not cold). This goes against general medical advice, but when their temperature goes that high it needs to be done.

nameymcnamechangeagain · 17/02/2020 17:32

I didn’t know ibuprofen was better - so thanks to previous poster for the suggestions, I now know for future!!

@Overseasmom100 thank you for asking!! He’s not been at all well today bless him but got docs appointment first thing and he has severe tonsillitis! I should have looked really but not being a doctor I didn’t think to, he throat was almost closed it was so swollen! Antibiotics for a week but he’s with his dad now so I’ll be worrying 😫

Can’t fault my doctors either, she checked my file while I was in there and got me up on the bed to do my year over due smear, not what I was prepared for but she admitted that there’s always something more seemingly more important and these things are often avoided so quick sharp got that done and it’s one thing off my mind!!

Ah that's good he's got some meds hope he feels better soon

JJPC · 17/02/2020 17:46

I was told it becomes a worry when paracetamol and ibuprofen won’t bring it down.

coffeeforone · 17/02/2020 18:22

I would worry if the ibuprofen doesn't bring it down, and if alternating calpol and nurofen don't keep it under control.
