Why do brioche rolls say eat within 3 days of opening

When they seemingly keep forever?
And would you worry about you child eating one after the pack had been open 5 days - it looked and smelled ok?

Our local supermarket chain (think Aldi , Lidl type) runs a campaign: Preserve what is precious! (My translation) encouraging buyers to trust their senses again.
Trust yours!

Baked goods are fine to eat so long as they haven’t gone mouldy! It should be a best before date on them really.

Nacreous · 16/02/2020 19:33

I wouldn't worry. Fairly sure cheddar says eat within a week. I don't listen to use by dates really

Because they don't taste as nice? Who keeps brioche for 3 days - in this house it'd be lucky to last for three minutes once the teenagers have sniffed them out Grin

MsPepperPotts · 16/02/2020 19:36

I always put bread, brioche, other baked stuff in freezer....( I couldn't get through a whole packet in 3 days)...stops a lot of wastage.

WhyNotMe40 · 16/02/2020 19:40

I think I will freeze from now on. I having a panic about it. I have diagnosed OCD and anxiety and let myself be persuaded to let child eat one

Yesterday I ate 2 brioche buns that had been open and in the fridge for 3 weeks! I can only imagine the recommendation is because they go stale quickly.

Ninkanink · 16/02/2020 19:45

They will be fine, just stale. Bread is perfectly safe to eat when it’s not mouldy.

WhyNotMe40 · 16/02/2020 19:57

They were cheap supermarket own brand chocolate chip brioche if that makes any difference.
What if they were mouldy but I didn't notice?!

I bought sultana brioche swirls in aldi last sunday they come in individual packets and ate two yesterday and they were delishus , bread is one of those foods that really is if it looks alright smells alright and isn't mouldy its alright to eat

RoomR0613 · 16/02/2020 19:59

What if they were mouldy but I didn't notice?!

Then they will still probably be fine.

Ninkanink · 16/02/2020 19:59

Mould on bread isn’t actually that bad for you. But they won’t have been mouldy that quickly anyway because of all the preservatives so I promise you they really would have been fine.

WhyNotMe40 · 16/02/2020 20:03

Thanks.
Ill try to stop panicking

Absolutely nothing whatsoever would happen.

The three day thing is because they go stale, not because they pose anything even resembling a health hazard.

userabcname · 16/02/2020 20:05

They just go a bit stale. We definitely don't get through a pack here in 3 days and we've been buying and eating them for ages with no ill effect.

Ninkanink · 16/02/2020 20:06

If you want to use them up more quickly once opened without having to freeze them, you could make lovely French Toast (eggy bread) or bread and butter pudding.
