What’s happened to wood burning stove?

6 months old?
I’ve contacted installer.
Turned it right down and it’s gone out. But what it is it and how worried should I be?
Chimney doesn’t seem to be on fire, but I’m anxious anyway so this is not good.

Looks like some sort of sealant or putty has been used incorrectly and is melting out? How often have you used it?

tootyfruitypickle · 16/02/2020 19:11

Maybe 20 odd times ? That’s reassuring , I’m here obsessing that the chimney is on fire . The guy is quite responsive so would expect he’ll get back tomorrow . Although worrying if it’s not been installed correctly - he was recommended and is very experienced. Do you think it’s safe enough now (it’s just embers and I won’t be relighting !)

Didn’t seem to be a smell but to be honest does still seem a bit fumy. Same as when first arrived but much less strong. Didn’t seem to be drawing well tonight. Co2 alarm operating ok and no issues but have opened doors around house .

If your chimney is on fire you'd hear it, it's a very distinctive noise (google it or YouTube it to hear what to listen for)

Our burner definitely has places that are sealed with putty and the putty needs periodically replaced so it could be that but it seems strange that it has only happened now (if you've been using it for 6 months)

If the fire is now out I'd just wait til the morning and contact the installer. Did you have the chimney lined etc at that time or just install a new burner?

tootyfruitypickle · 16/02/2020 19:46

We had it lined new. Perhaps all the weather has dislodged something in chimney? I’ll get installer to check and maybe it needs an extra sweep. Nothings come inside the stove.
Bit calmer now ! I’m not sure I should light it on my more anxious days!

Could it be from a build up of sap? Clutching at straws I know.

EcoCustard · 16/02/2020 19:52

Do you have lead flashing on your roof? If so, has the wind dislodged some and it's gotten in as it looks like that melted. Our putty sometimes dislodges but never looks like that.

tootyfruitypickle · 16/02/2020 19:53

No idea about lead flashing but maybe? 1930s house. Installer might know I guess as he’s been up there !
Maybe I’d better check in loft ! (Arg!)
