Sleep pattern mucked up

Wanted to post in here to hopefully get a bit more traffic and replies.

So basically my sleep pattern has gone to pot and I don't know how much more I can take.

I usually need about 8hrs a night to feel rested and function but since November last year I am unable to fall asleep. 2am seems to be the point I fall into a proper sleep. Before that I toss and turn and can't switch off.

There is nothing in my life that would have triggered this. Work at the minute is very stressful but thats a very recent thing so ok it maybe isn't helping now but certainly wasn't the root cause.

I've tried various self help things eg changed bedtime to later and also earlier. Bought a new mattress, pillows, duvet etc. Sleep with the window open and also tried closed. No caffeine at all after breakfast basically. Tried herbal teas. Limited screen time. Downloaded sleep apps. Tried Nytol herbal sleeping tablets. As you can see I am trying.

So gave in and went to my gp and she gave me one week worth of sleeping pills. She explained that this was due to them being addictive and was only short term to hopefully get my body back into a routine. Thing is they have worked and I've had the best nights sleep in a long time. However minute I stopped them I'm back to not sleeping.

Any advice or tips would be very, very welcome as I feel this is now having a detrimental effect on my whole life. I feel under a cloud and short tempered etc.

My sleep is completely screwed unless I do regular exercise, at least 5 days a week. It has to be hard exercise too; strolls and restorative yoga don't work.

Look on YouTube for a ~25 minute exercise video and do it at home. I like Ryan Shanahan Kettlebells workout. Try it for a week and see if that helps.

Good luck! It's frustrating, but healthier overall.

Will have a look but I do already go to the gym 3 days a week so not completly inactive

Are you just a nightowl? Do you have flexi time at work so could you actually live with sleeping at 2am and just get up later? I suppose you can't do this if you have children? But if you had a job where you could start at 11, that could work?
There was an article in a magazine a while ago about someone re-setting their body clock to be a morning person. It was things like exercising in the morning rather than the evening. It worked for the author of the article.

Herbal Nytol do nothing for me, but the non-herbal blue packet Nytol do work for me. Do you suffer from anxiety / sensory processing disorder? If so - try a weighted blanket.

Allyg1185 · 16/02/2020 20:28

Work is not flexi I start at the same time 5 days a week. 915am. I also have one ds ( 8 ) might try the blue Nytol. No anxiety etc. As I said it's just came out of the blue

How old? Mines recently gone to shite and appears to be my first peri menopause symptom.

Article in today's Observer about women and sleep. No quick fixes but an interesting read.

chocolateisavegetable · 16/02/2020 20:39

Interesting fairyfingers - my sleep went to shite towards the end of last year and is still shite. I'm 50, so could well be perimenopause.

Allyg1185 · 16/02/2020 20:43

I'm 34

"the non-herbal blue packet Nytol do work for me"

I was addicted to that at one point, got headaches without it. Not a big deal, I just had to take paracetamol for the headaches to come off it. Ran out when travelling once and addiction was broken.

Allyg1185 · 17/02/2020 20:26

I do feel in a bit a haze the next day after taking Nytol

I would get proper sleeping tablets on prescription and take them for 3 nights in a row and see if that resets you.

FET2020 · 17/02/2020 20:50

I’ve heard good things about weighted blankets.

How about trying an audiobook or white noise?

FET2020 · 17/02/2020 20:53

Also Sorry to be a bit rude but a good orgasm always sends me off to sleep when I’m having trouble ... 🤭

Allyg1185 · 17/02/2020 20:58

I have had proper sleeping pills prescribed by the dr and took them for 4 days. They really helped but the minute I stopped them i went back to not sleeping
