Any MNers who know Boston Mass well?

Soz should probably post in travel section...

Want to spent 3 nights in Boston (Massachusetts) in early November as part of a longer holiday. Am going cross eyed looking online at hotels - can anyone recommend a nice but affordable hotel/ BnB in central Boston?

We want to be walkable from things to see and feel safe with a 7yo and 10yo walking back after dinner etc. I’ve only visited Boston once years ago and and overly stressing about getting this wrong.

Can anyone help?

I live just outside Boston. What type of things to see do you mean?. There is so much to see in Boston and a lot of it is in different parts of the city. They do have a good subway system though so you can get places without too much difficulty. Also what kind of price and would you rather an air bnb or a hotel

We’ll be staying with friends in Maine for part of the holiday so will have 3 days in Boston. would love to do the trolley bus tour, Faneuil hall, tea party museum, fenway park. But ideally want to mooch about and just soak up the city centre, visit parks (eg with the duck statues) and eat nice food.

We also want to go to Salem but might do that on the trip down from maine

On hotel vs bnb I would want us all to be in one room/ family suite. Could go up to £200/ night as we will be staying with family for the rest of the trip so won’t have £££ costs.

Difficult to compare but want something nicer than a travelodge equivalent but don’t want to pay for fancy swimming pools/ bars in a hotel that we aren’t going to use

We are likely to be in Boston midweek - keen you be somewhere nearby nice restaurants that would cater for picky children that wa can wander back from without catching cans eyc

We stayed at the Westin Copley Place and loved it. A great location for walking everywhere. Nice big room with a view of the river.

I stayed at the Revere it was ok. Next time we go I want to stay at Liberty. We also looked at the Royal Sonesta which is just across the Charles river in Cambridge. There is a big mall (Cambridgeside) right next door.

I can give you my experiences. Don't stay in the Revolution - it's a PITA to get anywhere. Good areas to look are

Beacon Hill
Chinatown
Downtown
Fenway/Kenmore (watch out you're not too far west)
North End
Back Bay
Theater District

You could go north into Cambridge but don't go too far north there unless you want to take the subway everywhere.

I can't really recommend good value hotels as we always get hotel discounts when we go there, so we stay places like Hilton Back Bay. Hotel are more expensive if you don't include a Saturday night in your stay.

The Museum of Science is fabulous with kids btw. Also the Duck Boat tour, if it's running in Nov. And the Harvard Natural History Museum.

There are tons of restaurants, but a fun place to visit is Eataly - the one in Boston is huge, with loads of food stalls as well as sit down restaurants, and lots of Italian food to buy.

Where are you going to in Maine?

HoldMyLobster · 15/02/2020 21:38

Next time we go I want to stay at Liberty

Oh yes - DH and DD stayed there and liked it.

Belindabelle · 15/02/2020 21:38

You have to walk the Freedom trail. We did it in reverse starting at the Bunker Hill monument. You do walk for miles but we did it over two days. We also enjoyed visiting Harvard and MIT.

We had 3 full days in Boston before heading up to Maine then ended up in Cape Cod. We never got to Salem but we will definitely go back. I loved it all. I could easily live in Maine.

HoldMyLobster · 15/02/2020 21:47

I could easily live in Maine

It was -24C here last night Belindabelle. Just saying :-)

JoanieCash · 15/02/2020 21:47

I stayed in Royal Sonesta recently and it’s very well located. On river, near Charles Bridge and Science museum. Could walk around Boston easily, and well placed to go into Cambridge too. Would stay there again.

Ursaminor · 15/02/2020 21:49

Think the Dublin flight is heading to Manchester.

Ursaminor · 15/02/2020 21:49

Oops - sorry - wrong thread!

KidsWorkMastersLife · 15/02/2020 21:56

Thanks so much everyone - lots of stuff to go on online. So helpful as I was getting nowhere with general searching!

💐💐💐 to all

HoldMyLobster did you do the AMA thread about living on a Maine island? If so thank you so much I picked up some great tips from that thread.

I am from Scotland and found parts of Maine very familiar but I dont think it had ever been that cold.

HoldMyLobster · 15/02/2020 22:09

Belindabelle - no that was another regular poster, but I do nod along with most of the stuff she posts, and I loved that thread too.

I do adore Maine, even when it's very cold. Today we went for a dog walk across a lake, and it was sunny and beautiful, and as long as we wore the right gear we were warm enough. The bit I struggle with most is March/April when it feels like the snow has been on the ground forever and it will never melt. But then suddenly it does all melt and things are absolutely wonderful.

Topazwithpearls · 15/02/2020 22:20

We stayed at this B&B (innboston.com) a few years ago and really liked it. They have family rooms. We found the walk into the city centre very easy, but we didn't have young DC with us. It us a great city - you should have a lovely time!

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 15/02/2020 22:26

The aquarium is excellent. Clam chowder at Faneuil Hall.

LegoCardSwapper · 15/02/2020 22:34

Can't remember how much it cost but I've stayed at the Colonnade 3 times and found it easy to get to everything we wanted to do.
