Toy packaging has defeated me

Kids got a new marble set and wanted to play with it but I can't open it! Confused It's got these weird gold things in which I though were split pins but they are flat on both sides and don't budge. Any ideas on how I release them?! (Didn't really want to cut up all the plastic as was intending on making them put it all back when they are done!)

I’ve never seen those before but I know if I’m feeling wound up/frustrated I can’t think of a solution until I’ve given myself a bit of a breather and come back to it. Maybe come up with another storage solution to take the pressure off if you need to admit defeat and cut it.

FlamingoAndJohn · 15/02/2020 13:34

Cut them out and store the marbles in the traditional way, an SMA tin.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 15/02/2020 14:24

The traditional way is an old sock (without holes obviously Grin)

underneaththeash · 15/02/2020 14:27

Are they magnetic? You could put a magnet on either side and pull apart.

GlamGiraffe · 15/02/2020 14:27

I'm shocked a few marbles come in such a large plastic box!
I've never seen those glid things before. I suspect you have to cut them off. Every child needs a marble jar or tin. I'm sure you can find one lurking around. My sons was an old tea caddy.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 15/02/2020 14:34

Surely much better to keep them in a tin/draw string bag?

You could cut round the pins with a craft knife if you have one?

stayingontherail · 15/02/2020 14:51

Your confidence in using it as storage might be misplaced. I wonder if the manufacturer realised that the box is ineffective to store the marbles in, hence nailing the box shut.

74NewStreet · 15/02/2020 14:53

That packaging isn’t intended to be reused, by the look of it.

74NewStreet · 15/02/2020 14:53

It looks incredibly flimsy, like the sort you get in tins of biscuits.

Pavlova31 · 15/02/2020 14:57

Looks like they are firmly snap fitted or possibly glued together. I think scissors are the answer here Op.

LiveRightNow · 15/02/2020 17:45

Thanks all! It succumbed to the scissors and marbles have been re housed. You are right glamgiraffe the packing is ridiculous!

Prokup marbles in an old sock sounds like the beginning of a rather violent prison drama!! (I decided on the safer tin option!

LiveRight - tins can be quite dangerous, too, if your aim is good.
A sock is better for sneaking marbles into school - much less noise. My mate Gabi had a beautiful string bag - I had the sock (dark grey).

LiveRightNow · 15/02/2020 17:59

I had a lovely little dark red string bag for mine until some boys started using their marbles to set "traps" and we all got banned from playing them (and instead a yo-yo craze started that almost took my friends eye out).

Are the gold things split pins? You might need to turn the box over & bend them back together.

LiveRightNow · 15/02/2020 18:44

@Nat6999 not split pins, that's what thought at first. They were exactly the same on both sides (the second picture is the underside). My husband ended up cutting round them whilst I foraged in my cupboards for a new marble receptacle. One of the most pointless toy packets I've seen in a while.
